Research Profile

Biography

Justin Doran is Director of the Spatial and Regional Economics Research Centre and a lecturer in the Department of Economics, Cork University Business School, University College Cork.   

Justin is the 2018 recipient of the Moss Madden Memorial Medal which is awarded by the Regional Science Association International - British and Irish Section to the author of the best article on regional science published in a particular calendar year.  Justin received this award for his article on regional economic resilience published in Environment and Planning A available here.  Justin is the only UCC Economist to feature in Research Papers in Economics' (RePEc) ranking of top Irish economists based on publications in the past ten years which can be viewed here. Justin's research interests lie in the areas of regional economics, economic resilience, applied and spatial econometrics, business innovation and firm performance.  Justin has published over 30 peer reviewed academic articles in such highly ranked journals as Environment and Planning A, the Cambridge Journal of Regions Economy and SocietyRegional StudiesPapers in Regional ScienceSpatial Economic Analysis, Industry and Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Regional Development and Economic Letters among others.  He has won a number of other awards for his research including the Forfas 2009 Productivity Research Bursary, the Best Presentation by an Early Career Researcher/PhD Student at the 2009 annual conference of the Regional Studies Association British and Irish Section and Best Established Research Paper at the 2011 International Conference on Networking, Learning and Entrepreneurship.  A short research CV is available here.

Justin is an active member of the Regional Science Association International - British and Irish Section and was elected to the societies committee in August 2012.  In August 2016 Justin was elected as sectary of the RSAI-BIS.  He is also a committee member, a past secretary and current Chair of the Regional Studies Association - Irish Branch, having been elected to the committee in December 2012, elected to the role of secretary from December 2013 to December 2016 and elected to the role of Chair in December 2016.  Within UCC Justin serves on the University's Social Research Ethics Committee and also on the College of Business and Law's Research Committee.

Justin has been involved in the organisation of numerous academic conferences.  He was also one of the local organizers for the 9th annual conference of the Irish Society of New Economists which was help in UCC in August 2012.  Justin also, in conjunction with the Irish branch of the Regional Studies Association and the South West Regional Authority, hosted a one day conference on "Regional Resilience" in Cork on the 22nd of February 2013.    This was followed by a one day conference jointly organised with the Regional Studies Association - Irish Branch on "New Directions for Regional Development Policy in Ireland" in UCC on the 4th of September 2015.  He was on the local organising committee of the Regional Science Association International - British and Irish Section's 42nd Annual Conference held in Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge on the 20th to the 22nd August 2013.  He was also a local organiser for the European Regional Science Association's 58th Annual Congress held in UCC in August 2018. 

Justin is currently a Co-Editor of the journal Spatial Economic Analysis.  He is also an editor of the Taylor and Frances Open Access journal Cogent Economics and Finance.  Justin served as an editor for the Munich Personal RePEc Archive (MPRA) from Feb 2013 to Dec 2014. The MPRA is an initiative by economists of the RePEc network from different countries and runs under the responsibility of the Munich University Library which is part of the University of Munich.  He was also a judge in the Economics Panel for the Undergraduate Awards 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Teaching Interests

Justin teaches undergraduate students on the BA program and also teaches postgraduate courses on the MA in Economics and Masters in Economics Science.  His YouTube channel contains instructional videos on Econometrics, Macroeconomics, Stata and SPSS.  It can be accessed here.
