Research Profile

BIOGRAPHY

I have been a lecturer at the Department of Economics in University College, Cork since 1999. In 2009 I received an MA in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education for my thesis on the use of the Teaching for Understanding Framework and Sherlock Holmes narratives as a teaching tool for developing problem-solving and metacognitive skills for Economics students. I have presented nationally and internationally on teaching for understanding, integrative learning and creativity. I was nominated by the Vice-President for Teaching and Learning for a NAIRTL National Excellence in Teaching Award in 2009. I am a member of the NAIRTL funded Irish integrative Learning Project. This project has been nominated for a a NAIRTL National Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010.  I am currently interested in pedagogies that enable the development of self-authorship by learners in line with UCC's strategic objective to 'equip our students with the attitudes, attributes, knowledge, skills and value that they need to take advantage of the opportunities and challenges they will encounter throughout their lives.' I am currently in the prelimianry stages of developing a research project on transformational learning entitled: Promoting Transformational Teaching And Learning: Documenting And Enhancing: The Teaching For Understanding Framework For Student Self-Authorship. In September 2007 I presented research Dr. John Considine and myself have been developing on Arthur O’Connor at the History of Economic Thought Conference in Queens University, Belfast. On the basis of my presentation and our research to date we were asked to contribute a chapter to a major new book on Irish Economic Thought entitled: Ireland and Political Economy: Towards a History of Irish Economic Thought. This book has been developed as part of the Routledge Series on National Traditions in the History of Political Economy. Its editors are Professor T.A. Boylan, NUI Galway, Dr Renee Prendergast and Professor John Turner, Queens University. Dr Considine and I are developing this research portfolio on Arthur O’Connor and we have engaged in preliminary work on the links between Arthur O’Connor and James Barry and Arthur O’Connor’s thought on monopoly.

Research Interests

My current research interests are in exploring the teaching of economics, entrepreneurship, cognition and creativity and economics and the Arts. I am currently furthering the teaching of economics through reflective practice, integrative learning and mental development.

 Description

I currated the visual exhibition

(Re)Imagining the Ordinary Business of Life which was held in Aras na MacLeinn in UCC from  8th-19th october, 2012

I was asked by the Mature Students Office, UCC and subsequently volunteered to give a presentation to incoming mature students entitled: The Joy of Creative Inquiry

Following this presentation I have been asked by the Mature Students' Office if I would give a workshop on creative  inquiry, reflection and reflective practice. I have designed a workshop entitled

Sketches in the Art of Reflective Performance

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

I have experience teaching at postgraduate level. I have taught Case Research Methods and teach Forecasting and Scenario Planning to the MBS (Business Economics). I am the Programme Director for and teach on the Higher Diploma in Economics (Competition, Governance and Society). I have also taught on the MA (European Development) and (Coastal Management) developed by the Department of Geography, scaffolding non-economists in researching with case studies.

At undergraduate level I have had experience teaching modules in 2nd and 3rd year (BA, BA (LCS), BA (Euro Studies), BA (D&TS), BA (Mus). I am the programme director for Economics for the BCom (Inter)and BA (LCS). I have taught  on  the Evening Arts programme. I have taught on the 1st year BSCA programme, 3rd Year B.Comm programme and 4th year B.Comm module: Industry Structure and Competition.  The course outline and coursepack that I developed for this module was accepted into the Syllabus Project of the Ludwig Von Mises Institute.  I have been developing modules that encapsulate ideas in Teaching for Understanding, Integrative Learning, Reflective Learning, the Personal Development and Bloom¿s Taxonomy (Bloom, 1956) Kennedy (2007). Examples of this developing approach to my scholarship of teaching include:  1) Developing Reflective Journals as part of my assessment approach. My developing expertise in this pedagogical approach has been recognised by the Irish Integrative Learning Project. I have further been invited to develop and present a series of workshops on reflective practice for BSCF placement students by Careers Service Office.  2) Developing `enquiry-based¿ modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. I developed a Transferable Skills Project for 3rd Commerce in 2006/2007, engaging undergraduate students in research projects. I developed a  Literature Report for 4th year Evening Arts. 3) Developing Problem-solving pedagogy at undergraduate level. I have developed a problem-solving training module for undergraduate Economics students: Reasoning and Persuasion in Economics.  4) Developing `research methods¿ course at postgraduate level. Of my pedagogical efforts in Case Study Research, Professor Gavin Reid, University of St. Andrews said:`[this is] a  superbly documented course, solidly based on extensive reading in the pedagogic literature. The instructor has thrown heart and soul into providing top class materials for students. The guidance to students is detailed and very well thought out. The samples of feedback to students that I have seen are impressive. They provide excellent criticism, guidance and (not irrelevant) encouragement. Students gain a lot, too, from fieldwork experience; and the guidance on access to the field (including ethics) is good. Finally, the course, overall, is an excellent training in communication, especially business communication. Unusually, this is done in an intellectually fastidious way¿. (Personal Communication, 1st October, 2008).

I am also a volunteer teacher on the:
Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learningin Higher Education,
The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The Masters in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
for Ionad Bairre in UCC
