John Considine

Biography

John holds a BA and MA from UCC and a PhD from University of York (supervised by Huw Dixon).  His PhD dissertation was on the measurement of the fiscal deficit.

He has researched economics education and published in the Journal of Economic Education and the International Review of Economic Education.  He has worked with Brendan Kennelly (NUIG) and Darragh Flannery (UL) to examine the effectiveness of online assessments in economics.  The results of this work were referenced in a 2015 Journal of Economic Literature article "Research of Teaching Economics to Undergraduates".  His work on using visual content in teaching was cited with approval in 2019 review of 50 years of the Journal of Economics Education ("... cleverly conects a long-running cartoon series, The Simpsons, with the classic writings of Jonathan Swift and George Orwell to teach public choice.")

He has three decades of teaching experience and he was awarded the President's Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

John has also published in peer-reviewed journals on the sports economics, the history of economic ideas, health economics, and law & economics.  He is a founder and regular contributor to the hugely successful blog sportseconomics.org.
