He previously taught economics at Northern Illinois University and the University of Washington, was a staff economist at the Port of Seattle, and has consulted for the Port of Cork, the European Commission, the ESB, and private law firms. He serves on the editorial boards of Maritime Economics and Logistics and the International Journal of Transport Economics. He graduated from the University of Chicago, and received his PhD from the University of Washington.
His research focuses on competition policy in liner shipping, and on the economics of the family, with a current project on divorce in Ireland. He has also published papers on crime, unemployment, comparative competition law, and oligopoly in the lumber industry.
Research Interests
My early research was focused on industrial economics, with a particular emphasis on maritime industries, law and economics, and labor markets. In recent years, in addition to work on transportation, I have started to focus as well on the economics of the family, and am currently working on the law and economics of divorce in Ireland.

Teaching Activities
Teaching Interests
I currently teach industrial economics, price theory for government students, and the economies of Europe, all to undergraduates.
I have in the past taught at graduate level price theory, industrial economics, and game theory for MBAs. At that undergraduate level, I have taught intermediate price theory, principles of economics, mathematical economics, statistics for economists, law and economics, and European competition policy.
