Research Profile

BIOGRAPHY

 Dr. Richard Moloney is an Economics Lecturer and Director of the Centre for Policy Studies UCC. He received a B.Sc. in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Maths (1976) and a H. Dip. in Ed. (1977) from UCD. He obtained a B.A. (Special) in Economics (1986) and a M.A. in Economics (1989) both from UCC. He completed his PhD at Strathclyde University, Glasgow (1998). He worked as second level teacher from 1977 to 1991 when he joined the Department of Economics. He has been a lecturer in the Centre for Policy studies since 2003 and Director since 2006.  

Dr. Moloney has published 18 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has been co-author on three books. His published works include papers on the Forestry Sector, the Port Sector, Tourism, Regional Development, Agglomeration Economies, Cluster Analysis, the Marine and Environment. His research focus is on Industrial Structure, Tourism, Rural Development, Forestry, Input Output Analysis, Environmental Economics and Marine research. As well as publishing peer reviewed research Dr. Moloney has been involved in producing 26 commissioned reports. He has also presented his research findings at more the 30 conferences in Ireland and internationally.

Dr. Moloney has conducted collaborative research with many academic and non academic groups. These include the Department of Geography, UCC, the Department of Food Business and Development, UCC, The Costal and Marine Resource Centre, UCC, Cork Institute of Technology, National Centre for Tourism Policy Studies, University of Limerick, the Department of Forestry, UCD, the Port of Cork, Cork City and County Councils, the Irish Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration Association. Dr. Moloney is the Irish representative on the EU Action 45 European Forest Externalities and Environmental Planning. He is a member of the Management Committee and has presented at the groups sessions. He organised one of the meetings of the group in UCC. Dr. Moloney has wide experience in teaching.

His teaching interests include Econometrics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Economics of Information, Regional Economics with special emphasis on the European Union, and Economics of Strategy. He has also made presentations on teaching at undergraduate and post graduate levels. He has taught on various adult education and night degree courses at UCC. He has had a large number of supervisions at postgraduate level including M.A., M.B.S., MBA, and PhD Thesis. He has acted as Internal Examiner, National University of Ireland at PhD level. He has also been External Examiner at PhD level for the University of Sydney.
