I am currently completing a PhD study in the area of language rights under the supervision of Professor Siobhan Mullally. My thesis investigates the gaps between language rights in theory and in practice through an examination of current and prospective language legislation in Ireland and the United Kingdom. The specific focus of the thesis is to investigate the extent to which states accept positive obligations relating to the provision of language services in the public sector. This study is conducted against the backdrop of a shift in international human rights law recognising the legitimacy of language rights as promotion orientated rights imposing positive obligations on states.
My PhD has been funded by the Higher Education Authority.
Prior to commencing this thesis I worked as a legal researcher for the Law Reform Commission of Ireland and the Irish Penal Reform Trust.
In 2010, I was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the University of Notre Dame.
I have held a number of teaching positions and have experience in teaching at Third Level, in Further Education and at Secondary School level and across a wide range of areas including Property Law, Equity, Criminal Law, Media Law and Employment Law.
BIOGRAPHY
