Research Profile

Biography

Dr Eileen Duggan was awarded a PhD in Medicine from UCC in 2013, for her research which examined the epidemiology of childhood allergic disorders in Cork schoolchildren.  With special focus on the effects of farming exposures during early childhood, her research also applied the novel geographical information system Health Atlas Ireland, for pattern analysis modelling. In her work as a lecturer in the medical school in UCC, Eileen teaches and facilitates student research projects.  She also co-ordinates the undergraduate student support programme.  Her research in medical education examines students’ participation and attitudes towards research, as well the use of reflection and visual thinking strategies to promote the development of observation, critical thinking and professionalism in medical students. Eileen also supports technological advances such as simulation in medical education and is a member of the ASSERT (Application of Science to Simulation Education and Research on Training) centre in UCC.  She was a team member on the FP7 funded project S-HELP (Securing Health Emergency Learning Planning).  The ASSERT work package is responsible for the development of training modules for health services to deal with the occurrence of  natural and deliberate disasters and the validation of multi-agency, cross-border decision support systems to facilitate the management of such events.
