Research Profile

Yvonne Nolan

Biography

Yvonne Nolan is a Professor in Anatomy and Neuroscience, Funded Investigator in APC Microbiome Ireland and a Science Foundation Ireland Investigator. She leads a research team investigating the impact of modifiable lifestyle factors such as exercise, stress and diet on memory and mood though the lifespan. Recent work focuses on adolescence, middle age an Alzheimer's. The role of the gut microbiome and hippocampal neurogenesis is of particular interest. Research in Professor Nolan’s team investigates Yvonne graduated from NUI, Galway with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry, and a PhD in Neuropharmacology.  She was a visiting scholar at McGill University Montreal, Canada and held postdoctoral positions in Trinity College, Dublin. In 2003 she was appointed as Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience, UCC, in 2011 she was promoted to Senior Lecturer and to Professor in 2020.

Research in Professor Nolan's laboratory focuses on the effects of inflammation, exercise, stress and diet on hippocampal plasticity and neurogenesis (the birth of new neurons) and on associated learning, memory and mood throughout the lifespan. To date she has supervised >30 PhD/MSc/postdoctoral researchers/to completion and has also supervised numerous visiting and undergraduate students. She was awarded UCC’s Research Supervisor of the Year Award, 2016. She has a number of collaborations with academic and industrial partners and her team have had recognition for research in the form of prizes, image exhibition and media coverage. She has published >80 full-length journal articles and >150 conference abstracts. Her H-index is 37 (Google Scholar) and her work has been cited >5500 times. She has secured ~€5.5M in research funding as Lead Investigator from Science Foundation Ireland, Marigot Ireland Ltd, Molecular Medicine Ireland, Irish Research Council, Weston Trust, and Vasogen Inc., Canada. She was consortium lead on a European Centres of Excellence in Neurodegeneration (COEN) project.

Yvonne is Vice Dean of Graduate Studies in the College of Medicine and Health and Professor in Neuroscience. Her mission for Graduate Studies is to 'advance curiosity-driven professionalism and research excellence for health-related global challenges, in a student-centred, respectful and inclusive environment.' With her team on the Graduate Studies committee, she is committed to  supporting students to achieve and succeed in whatever area of education or research they are pursuing, including translation of learning into their work lives, and advancing their careers. https://www.ucc.ie/en/med-health/gradstudies/

Yvonne was Director of the BSc in Neuroscience in UCC from 2015-2020 in which she promoted collegiality, teamwork and engagement. Since her appointment in 2003, she has taught Anatomy and Neuroscience to students in Occupational, Speech and Language Therapy, Neuroscience, Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Osteoarchaeology and Audiology programmes. In 2006 she was awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (UCC), and in 2008 she received a National Academy award for the Integration of Research and Teaching and Learning. She was part of an interdisciplinary team that created ‘Brainpower’: a free online course and Digital Badge on brain and behaviour for student success. She provides both informal and formal mentoring to students and staff and was a role model on the Aurora leadership programme for women in Higher Education.

Yvonne contributes to the scientific and wider community through research projects with Down Syndrome Cork and industrial partners, and talks to schoolchildren, teachers, professional societies and the general public on adolescent and older adult brain health. She has organised conferences, symposia and public events including a symposium on the "Hippocampus in Health and Disease" in 2014 with guest speaker Nobel Laureate John O'Keefe, and “Brain Connections”, a public event on dementia and Parkinson’s in 2018. She is a judge for the Irish Laboratory Awards and sits on the Independent Advisory Board for the Wellcome/HRB Irish Clinical Academic Training (ICAT) programme and
for Dementia Research Network Ireland (DNRI). She is a member of Society for Neuroscience, Psychoneuroimmunology Research Society, and Neuroscience Ireland.

Research Interests

Research in Dr. Nolan’s group is focused on understanding how lifestyle factors such as exercise, stress and diet throughout the life course impact upon neuronal functions and behaviour, with a focus on inflammation as a critical mediator.  We work on the role of the gut microbiome and hippocampal neurogenesis (the birth of new neurons) in mediating these environmental influences on the brain and behaviour.  Concurrently, an awareness of modifiable lifestyle factors (exercise, diet, music) for brain health is promoted.

The inter-related aims of Dr. Nolan’s research programme are:
1. To understand the mechanisms underpinning the interplay between chronic neuroinflammation and exercise on hippocampal neurogenesis (a form of brain plasticity involving the production of new neurons from stem cells) and behaviour (memory and mood) during sensitive periods of the lifespan, specifically adolescence and older age
2. To interrogate the role of the gut microbiota in Alzheimer’s disease and in exercise-induced changes in inflammation, brain plasticity and behaviour in ageing
3. To identify the inflammatory mechanisms underlying the negative effects of a cafeteria diet on brain and behaviour and to investigate exercise as a mitigating strategy
4. To increase understanding of learning strategies, academic motivation, well-being, and anxiety linked with inflammation in adolescent undergraduate students in UCC
5. To investigate musical training on cognition and sociability in children with Down Syndrome

Career Development for Postgraduate students and Postdoctoral Fellows:

  • Academic mentor to Dr. Caitriona Long-Smith under SFI’s Advance Award initiative to promote women in science and technology (2014 – 2016).
  • Chair of the Career Development Workshop at the Young Neuroscientists Symposium, Trinity College Dublin, (Sept 2014).
  • Mentor to a senior postdoctoral researcher as part of UCC’s Through the Glass Ceiling: Career Progression Programme and Strategy for Female Academics and Researchers (2011 – 2013).

  • I encourage my postgraduate students to participate in conferences and competitions aimed at advancing the public awareness of scientific research. One of my PhD students was shortlisted for the Biosciences Institute PhD student of the year competition (2012), and three of my PhD students were shortlisted for UCC’s Science for All and Doctoral Showcase competitions (2007, 2010, 2011); the aim of both of these forums is to encourage UCC research students to think of innovative ways to communicate their research to non-specialists.

Contribution to Open Days and School Liaison activities:

  • Advisor to two transition year students from Mean Scoil Mhuire gan Smál Roscommon on their project entitled “The chronic effect of physical activity on memory” which they submit to the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (2014).
  • Facilitation of work experience in my laboratory for a secondary school transition year student from Scoil Mhuire (2011).
  • Organisation of the departmental participation in research information and lab tours to 2nd science students to assist students in selecting their study options (2006 - 2008)

Contribution to Public Awareness of Neuroscience:

  • Organiser of the symposium "The Hippocampus in Health and Disease" with guest speaker Nobel Laureate John O'Keefe (Dec 2014). Dissemination about the event on RTE's 9:00pm news and RTE's 4:00pm Nuacht programmes, which was also publisised in the Irish Times, irish Examiner, Irish Independent, Metro-Herald, Evening Echo, Corkman, The Irish World, Irish Medical News, Connaught Telegraph.
  • Exhibitor at the “It’s a Beautiful World – celebrating beauty in science and nature” exhibition at the Jennings gallery, UCC with two pieces: “Becoming Neurons” (with Louise Collins and Suzanne Crotty), and “Myelin is getting on my Nerves” (with Eric Downer and Richard Magee) Feb – Mar 2014.
