Biography

Fergus is a Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Principal Investigator at the INFANT Centre. He is also Clinical Lead for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in CUMH and a Maternal Fetal Medicine Subspecialist. He graduated with honours in Medicine from University College Cork in 2003. Fergus has a Master's in Epidemiology from the University of London and a Diploma in Clinical Education from the National University of Ireland, Galway. He received his PhD in 2012 for work investigating the aetiology and potential treatments for pre-eclampsia. He has >150 publications in world-leading journals such as the European Heart Journal, Lancet, and PLoS Medicine, and >500 conference publications. Following his PhD, Fergus completed a Clinical Academic Training Fellowship and Maternal Fetal Medicine Subspecialist fellowship at King’s College London. He completed his training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and achieved his first independent major grant with the NIHR investigating the life-long cardiovascular implications of pre-eclampsia. He also has ongoing key collaborations with UCL, Farr Institute, NPEU in Oxford, and the University of Oxford.
He is an executive member and Treasurer of the International Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy. He continues to represent the RCOG Maternal Medicine (including Hypertensive Disease) Clinical Studies group. In 2019 he was appointed a Senior Lecturer at the INFANT Research Centre and in April 2023, the Clinical Lead for Obstetrics in CUMH. He leads three international studies: BEFORE Birth, HRB-funded SCOPE, and EU-FP7-funded IMPROvED at the  Irish Centre for Fetal and Neonatal Transnational Research (INFANT). Fergus's research team includes seven PhD students, four postdoctoral fellows, and 2 MSc Students.
Fergus is Dad to 4 children aged 10 8, 6 and 4, husband to Elaine and loves running and training. ‍
