Biography
Personal statement
I competitively obtained an independent tenured academic position at University College Cork in 2008 and have since advanced to a senior lectureship, equivalent to associated professor, reflecting my commitment to excellence in research and teaching. I have over 20 years’ experience in gastrointestinal physiology and enteric neuroscience and have built up a repertoire of expertise in enteric physiology and pharmacology, the brain-gut axis, and microbiota-host interactions. My work on mapping the neural pathways between the gut and the brain led to the clinical investigation of GABAB receptor agonists in the management of reflux disease. My laboratory has developed significant expertise in assessing gastrointestinal physiology in different animal models and species using the Ussing chamber technique. I am a respected Funded Investigator in the ‘Gut Brain Microbe Axis’ theme at APC Microbiome Ireland. As an indication of my influence in neurogastroenterology, I represented Ireland on the Steering Committee of the European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility from 2015 until 2020.
Contributions to the early careers of excellent researchers
I have contributed towards the training of highly skilled researchers, addressing the need for an increase in people with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics knowledge. I have graduated postgraduate students who are now employed in the provision of training and research solutions, regulatory affairs or have continued their research careers. Postdoctoral trainees I mentored are now working in the pharmaceutical and food sectors. I have also hosted ERASMUS Trainees from the University of Bologna, Universita Degli Studi Di Milano, and the University of Bonn. I have externally examined 7 PhDs from Massey University, University of Melbourne, Universita Degli Studi Di Padova, Queen Mary University of London, and University of Antwerp. I also co-organised the MINDinGUT International Spring/Summer School in 2021 with European partners from Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and Belgium.
Contribution to supporting broader society & the economy
I have ongoing collaborations with the Food and Pharmaceutical Industry. Moreover, my research has attracted funding from National (SFI, HRB, IRC) and European (Marie Curie) programmes. I have a long-standing passion for public engagement and science communication. I’ve given >30 invited talks and my work has been profiled in national Press (Irish Independent, Irish Examiner, TechCentral) and on Radio (Dublin South FM).

Research Interests
My career has resulted in numerous contributions to the scientific research community. My research has shown that targeting GABAB receptors in the central nervous system can modulate brain-gut functioning having first identified the brain regions involved in the innervation of the lower oesophageal sphincter. This work supported the clinical investigation of GABAB receptor agonists in the management of reflux disease. I also described the fundamental roles of the gut hormones Peptide YY (PYY) and PYY(3-36) on gastrointestinal physiology in health and disease (obesity) and I was the first to characterise intestinal secreto-motor responses in germ-free mice, supporting their use as a tool to investigate microbe-host interactions ex vivo (DOI: 10.1111/nmo.12328; published as a Hot Topic; for commentary see, DOI:10.1111/nmo.12366). Over the past 15 years I have developed further capability in the behavioural aspects of the gut-brain connection. Our review describing the interactions between the microbiome and the enteric nervous system (DOI: 10.1016/j.ydbio.2016.06.027; 111 citations) is ranked in the top 100 articles for social media metrics against all other articles published in Developmental Biology in the same year. I have given >30 invited talks at international scientific meetings (e.g., 49th European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Meeting; 8th European Paediatric GI Motility Meeting), R&D business collaboration fora (e.g., Global Engage) and educational events (Coloplast Ostomy Days; 800 ostomy care nurses from 20 countries around the world).LABORATORY MEMBERS & ALUMNI
