Research Profile

Gerard Clarke

Biography

Dr Gerard Clarke is a lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry. Gerard graduated with a B.Sc (Hons) in Chemistry from NUI, Galway followed by a M.Sc in Neuropharmacology from the same institution. He subsequently received a Ph.D (Department of Psychiatry) from University College Cork (UCC). Gerard was a visiting scientist in the University of Mississippi Medical Centre in Jackson prior to working for a number of major multi-national pharmaceutical companies in both Ireland and Australia, including Wyeth, Pfizer and 3M. This was followed by periods working as a postdoctoral researcher in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, as a Research Fellow in the Department of Psychiatry and as a lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology/School of Pharmacy in UCC before taking up his current position as a Lecturer in Psychiatry.

Gerard's current research focus takes a translational approach to the assessment of neurpharmacological indices of stress-related disorders such as depression and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This approach incorporates studies in both clinical populations and in animal models using early-life stress templates that produce specific disease phenotypes in adulthood. He is particularly interested in the advancing our understanding of how tryptophan degradation along the kynurenine pathway influences psychopathology and in evaluating novel therapeutic interventions which can reverse such deficits. His research also interrogates the impact of microbiota manipulation on the central nervous system. This is a rapidly expanding area of research with enormous potential and one which is studied using the combined approach of germ-free animals, probiotic administration and antibiotic induced dysbiosis. His research has been recognised internationally by travel awards from the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) as well as a prestigious career development award from the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS) and a NARSAD award from the Brain and Behaviour Research Foundation. In addition, he is currently a principal investigator on a HRB funded study examining the links between kynurenine pathway metabolites and cognitive dysfunction in IBS and has just recently acquired HRB funding to examine the biological burden of caregiving.
