Fiona MacLeod

Biography

Fiona qualified in medicine at Saint George's Hospital Medical School, London, and completed postgraduate training in clinical hospital medicine and general practice in the United Kingdom. In 1995 she obtained a Masters degree, with distinction, in Health Services Management at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Fiona has been employed in both hospital and general practice posts in the United Kingdom, and now works in sessional General Practice in Ireland. She has worked in developing and transitional countries including Peru, Angola and the Republic of Macedonia, in her clinical capacity as well as in the fields of health service development and research.

Research Interests

  • Interdisciplinarity in a stand alone undergraduate public health degree.
  • Competencies in graduates of stand alone undergraduate degrees in public health
  • First Year engagement in interdisciplinary learning. 
  • Attitudes of healthcare students to publichealth issues - individual and societal perspectives.
  • The impact of diet and lifestyle factors on type 2 diabetes and its complications - designed and implemented a randomised controlled trial to study the effect of dietary salt restriction on blood pressure and glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes (Salt Study).
