Research Profile

Darren Dahly

Biography

Dr Dahly has degrees in Biology (BA, Hendrix College), International Health (MHS, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health), and Nutritional Epidemiology (PhD, University of North Carolina). He has previously worked as a Lecturer in Epidemiology in the Division of Biostatistics, University of Leeds, where he was funded by a MRC fellowship to study infant growth patterns; and as a Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University College Cork, where he was funded by an HRB Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement award to investigate the impact of maternal factors on perinatal health. Dr Dahly is experienced with a variety of statistical models and study designs, and particularly interested in the application of latent variable and longitudinal models in health research.

Research Interests

I am interested in the early life determinants of human growth and nutrition, and how these early experiences can impact lifelong health. Methodologically, I am interested in spatial, longitudinal and latent variable statistical methods.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

I was Lecturer in Epidemiology at the University of Leeds School of Medicine from November of 2008 to June 2013. I was initially responsible for leading and teaching on the MSc in Nutrition, Obesity, and Health, and supervising MSc research dissertations. I was also a member of the MSc in Statistical Epidemiology management team (later the MSc in Epidemiology and Biostatistics), and the School of Medicine’s Postgraduate Programme and Exams Committees. I have helped develop and deliver an international workshop on statistical methods for life course epidemiology. Lastly, I completed the in-class component of ULTA-2 at Leeds, a 40 credit, masters-level course on learning and teaching in higher education.

Drawing from these experiences, I have developed an approach to learning and teaching that is research-led, and blends theoretical topics in epidemiology and biostatistics with useful skills for statistical programming, data visualization, and communication (written and oral) of scientific research.
