Biography
Dr Frances Shiely qualified with a BA from the University of Limerick in 1998 and a PhD degree in Epidemiology in 2003. She was awarded a Masters in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from UCC (2017) and a PG Certificate in Clinical Trials from the University of Edinburgh (2018). She is a Senior Lecturer in Patient-Focused Research, jointly appointed to the HRB Clinical Research Facility and the School of Public Health. Frances is Director of Education for the HRB CRF-C, is a senior manager and is co-PI and UCC lead for the HRB Trials Methodology Research Network. She is Programme Director for the MSc Clinical Trials (online) which launched in UCC in September 2018. Frances is a member of the BSc Public Health Sciences Executive Committee which leads on curricular development and the implementation of the BSc Public Health Sciences Degree programme. She is also one of the core teaching faculty for the degree on which she has taught since her appointment in 2005. She has also taught on the MPH, Dental MPH, MA Gerontology and the undergraduate medical programme. She has graduated 4 PhD students, currently supervises 4 others, and has extensive experience supervising MPH and undergraduate projects. Frances has two main research interests: clinical trial methodology and physical activity and diet related research for the prevention of disease. Research Interests
My research areas are: clinical trials; clinical trial methodology; lifestyle epidemiology; risk taking behaviour; physical activity and diet related research for the prevention of disease. I have experience designing clinical trials and writing clinical trial protocols. I collaborate with colleagues in the University of Washington, Seattle, University of Leeds, National Cancer Registry, National Perinatal Epidemiology Centre, University College Dublin, University of Limerick, NUI Galway, Economic and Social Research Institute, Royal College of Surgeons and locally in UCC. I have given several newspaper and radio interviews related to my research locally and internationally.Publications

Teaching Interests
I have been actively involved in teaching at third level since September 1998. During that time I have taught on
- MB BCh BAO Medicine, BSc Public Health, BSc Sport Science, BA Physical Education
- MSc Public Health, MA Dental Public Health, MA Occupational Health, MA Health Promotion.
I have taught specialised courses in
- Advanced Epidemiology, Health Information Systems, Health Promotion, Determinants of Health in Old Age, Principles and Practice of Public Health, Anatomy and Physiology, Introductory statistics, Introduction to SPSS.
- I have developed my own module evaluation, which I use to monitor my teaching effectiveness.
