Biography:
I am a Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, UCC, and co-ordinator of the Health Promotion Pathway on
the Masters in Public Health (MPH). My research is focused on Nutrition Epidemiology and is anchored in the HRB Centre for
Diet and Health Research.
My background is Nutrition, specifically, Public Health Nutrition and Nutrition Epidemiology. I recently submitted and
defended my PhD thesis titled "Diet, lifestyle and modifiable environmental risk factors for cardiovascular disease: patterns
and clusters in cross sectional analysis". The study included analysed data from 3 major research projects (SLAN 2007 and
the Cork and Kerry Diabetes and Heart Disease Study 1998 and follow up in 2008 and the Mitchelstown Cohort Study). The Cork
& Kerry Study has provided extensive data on the prevalence of established CVD, Type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome and
the distribution of major risk factors for CVD and type 2 diabetes. The over-arching focus of my PhD was to investigate the
association between dietary patterns and clustering of dietary patterns with other lifestyle behaviours and major health outcomes.
I have presented research findings at a number of national and international conferences and published these findings in peer
reviewed journals. I was a member of the SLAN 2007 consortium which conducted and completed the 3 rd and largest Irish National
Health and Lifestyle Survey to date and was the lead author on the nutrition report from SLAN (Dietary Habits of the Irish
Population) and a co-author on the main survey report.
