Selena O'Connell

Biography

Selena joined the National Suicide Research Foundation and School of Public Health, UCC in 2021. She initially worked across three projects with a focus on suicide bereavement including a national survey of people bereaved by suicide; an evaluation of a counselling service for people who have experienced traumatic bereavement; and an evaluation of HUGG peer-support groups for suicide bereavement. She now works on the PRISM project led by Dr Eve Griffin. Within this project, she is the primary researcher on a work package which aims to in identify the determinants contributing to the implementation of the National Clinical Programme for self-harm across Irish hospitals.  

Selena graduated with a BA in Psychology from Trinity College Dublin in 2016. Following this, she took up a research assistant post on the pilot study of the Safe Nurse Staffing and Skill-mix Framework in Adult Hospitals in Ireland, in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. Selena defended her PhD thesis entitled ‘The Development and Piloting of a Discrete Choice Experiment to Measure the Support Preferences of People with Chronic Respiratory Diseases in Ireland’ in December 2020. She took up two part-time post-doctoral researcher roles following completion of her PhD. She worked on mySupport Study: a cross-case analysis of the implementation of the Family Carer Decision Making (FCDS) in six countries. The FCDS is an educational intervention to facilitate family involvement in decision-making regarding end-of-life care for people with dementia. She also worked with the Health Implementation Science and Technology (HIST) Cluster in University of Limerick across a number of projects involving implementation science.
