Research Profile

Sheena McHugh

Biography

Sheena is a Research Fellow funded by the Centre for Ageing Research and Development in Ireland (CARDI) through the Leadership Fellowship Programme. Sheena was awarded the fellowship in 2015 to carry out a three-year research programme on falls prevention in older adults, particularly those with diabetes. She is also involved in the HRB Research Leader Award  'Improving care for people with Diabetes - A population approache to prevention and control', leading a mixed methods evaluation of the implementation of the National Clinical Care Programme for Diabetes.

Prior to this, Sheena was part of the HRB Interdisciplinary Capacity Enhancement Post-doctoral Fellowship Scheme. She was responsible for  examining the determinants of health service use across different age cohorts using data from 9 national observational studies. In 2012, Sheena worked as a post-doctoral researcher on an efficiency review of the national breast cancer screening programme, commissioned by the Department of Health.

She graduated in March 2012 having completed the PhD Scholars Programme in Health Services Research, a four year structured PhD programme funded by the Health Research Board. Her thesis was entitled “The Quality of Diabetes Care in the Community: Practice, Policy and Culture”. She is an active member of the National Health Services Research Centre. Sheena graduated from University College Dublin with a degree in Psychology in 2006. Her final year thesis focused on the use of social coping strategies among gifted children in Ireland. In 2007 she completed an MSc in Health Psychology at University College London. During that time Sheena developed an interest in chronic disease management. Her MSc thesis examined the influence of illness and treatment beliefs on adherence to treatment regimens in people with diabetes. Sheena joined the Department in 2007.
