Lecturer In Medical Education (MUH)
Medical School

E: a.joy@ucc.ie

Dr. Aislinn Joy, a graduate of UCC's School of Medicine in 1995, first joined UCC as Lecturer in Medical Education (MUH) in 2007 having worked in adult and paediatric emergency-based hospital practice for over ten years. As Lecturer in Medical Education, her main research interest is the construction of learning and identity in real, simulated and/or networked healthcare education contexts. She has recently submitted her PhD (Ed) at the School of Education UCC on this topic: 'Understanding Collaborative Learning in Networked Simulation-based Healthcare Education'. From a curricular perspective, she is responsible for overseeing Final year learning (including inter-professional learning) and assessment in Medicine at the Mercy University Hospital and is Lead for Interprofessional Learning within the Medical Education Unit (MEU).

She has led a number of initiatives within the college, which include: the successful application for the School of Medicine to be an accredited training body (in 2007) for BLS and later ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) simulation courses; an integrated First Aid course for medical students (2008); and an ongoing interprofessional safe prescribing initiative (funded by NAIRTL in 2009) at MUH, in conjunction with the School of Pharmacy UCC and Department of Pharmacy MUH. From 2010-2014 she also was responsible for the modular development of clinical science and practice (GM1010) in the first year of the Graduate Entry programme to Medicine. Most recently, with the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee, she led the development of a '10 tips for bedside teaching' resource (2015) to be implemented at MEU faculty development days.

She is a member of the executive of the Irish Network of Medical Educators (INMED) and serves as a regulatory body panel member for the accreditation of Masters level Healthcare Professional Programmes.
