Research Profile

Aislinn Joy

Biography

Dr. Aislinn Joy works as Lecturer in Medical Education at the School of Medicine, University College Cork (UCC). Like her peers in the Medical Education Unit (MEU), she comes from a background of many years in clinical practice. Dr. Joy graduated from UCC Medicine in 1995, interned at Cork University Hospital (CUH), initially trained in Surgery (CUH scheme, followed by ENT surgery), before moving into paediatric and adult Emergency Medicine. It was while working and leading teams in busy Emergency Departments that her interest in a professional career as a medical educator was fostered. She began instructing Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) to multi-professional teams and subsequently became medical director for ACLS courses in the Munster area for 10 years.

During this time, in 2006, when there were more calls for medical education to become professionalised (underscored by the Fottrell report that year), Dr. Joy changed trajectory and turned towards the theory and practice of medical education as a career. Her initial teaching and clinical site coordination-focused medical education post was at the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) site in 2007, before moving full-time to UCC campus at the Medical Education Unit (MEU) in Brookfield in 2018. Dr. Joy completed her PhD in Education at UCC in 2022. This research explored how best to support collaborative learning in distance simulation contexts.

Current MEU roles include Lead for Interprofessional Learning (IPL), Year 2 Coordinator for the Undergraduate Medicine Programme, and coordinator of 5 MEU modules (3 undergraduate; 2 postgraduate). Current School of Medicine (SoM) roles include Co-Director of the Masters (MCh) in Surgical Science and Chairperson of the SoM Graduate Studies Committee. Dr. Joy is also an active member of the UCC College of Medicine and Health (COMH) IPL Development committee. Her Case Study of Good Practice, which detailed the curricular development of IPL at the School of Medicine, was commended by a recent UCC Quality Review panel.  As well as supporting curricular review locally (medical and dental), Dr. Joy sits on programme accreditation/external assessor panels nationally (for the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland 2014-2019, and Medical Council Ireland currently). Reports from such programme accreditations in which she has been involved are available to read in the public domain.

Her research interests in health professions' and higher education include: innovating teaching and learning pedagogies (all contexts); Interprofessional Learning (IPL); human factors for patient safety; as well as areas of interest in the field of medical humanities. Dr. Joy is currently supervising seven medical student final year projects (FYPs), one Health Professions' Education (HPE) Masters student's dissertation, and one PhD student in these areas. She served on the UCC Social Research and Ethics Committee (SREC) for 5 years, during which time this committee received a UCC research award (in 2021) for creating a culture for responsible conduct of research.  Nationally, she has served as a volunteer member of the Executive of the Irish Network of Healthcare Educators (INHED) and has co-led the INHED Research subcommittee (2015-2020).
