Research Profile

Colm Ó Tuathaigh

Biography

Colm O’Tuathaigh received his PhD in behavioural neuroscience from University of Leicester in 2002. Between 2001-2003, he held the position of postdoctoral researcher in biology at California Institute of Technology, where he worked on a project involving the investigation of the neural basis of learning.  Between 2004-2010, he was a senior postdoctoral fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, where his research focused on preclinical genetic models of psychotic disorders. In 2007, Dr. O'Tuathaigh was awarded a Health Research Board (HRB) of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship. In 2010, he was appointed to the position of lecturer in medical education at the School of Medicine in University College Cork.

His research interests involve the investigation of gene-environment interplay in neuropsychiatric disorders, as well as the the neurobiological basis of social and cognitive deficits observed in schizophrenia and other CNS disorders. His medical education research interests revolve around human factors which influence clinical communication and patient safety. Dr. O'Tuathaigh’s research has attracted funding from Science Foundation Ireland, Health Research Board of Ireland, EU Lifelong Learning Programme, and other funding bodies.
