Dr Coffey is a Senior Lecturer, Director of International and Global Relations and Chair of the Healthy Ageing Research Theme at Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery at UCC. She commenced her academic carrier in 2001 as course director of the first Post Graduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing at UCC. Her current and past research projects are focused on Ageing and Older people with a particular interest in Transitions in Health and illness for Older People . She is currently principle investigator on research projects funded by the Health Service Executive, Irish Hospice Foundation and co-applicant on a Health Research Board funded RCT project: Systematic Implementation of Advanced Care Directive to Long Term Care facilities (2015-2018). Her teaching in gerontological nursing spans undergraduate and post graduate programmes and she supervises various research projects at Masters and Doctoral level in the area of older adult care. Alice has many years of clinical nursing experience centred on care of older adults that included clinical nurse management of a rehabilitation unit for older adults. She is a member of the All Ireland Gerontological Nurse Association, Irish Gerontological Society, ISS21 Ageing Research Cluster, COLLAGE (Collaboration on Ageing) in UCC. She is a member of the Editorial board of the International Journal of Older People Nursing and reviewer and publishes in a number of peer-reviewed international journals.

 

 

 

 

Research Interests

My primary research interests are Ageing Research and Gerontology with particular interest in Transitions in health and illness for older people and their families. I lead the Healthy Ageing Research Programme within the school of Nursing and Midwifery and collaborate on a number of projects with the Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation and the Department of General Practice at UCC. I am a member of the multidisciplinary Ageing Research cluster at UCC and the All Ireland Gerontological Nurses Association (AIGNA). My research collaborations extend across Europe and the U.S.  I supervise MSc, PhD and DN research dissertations.I am a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Older People Nursing and I am a reviewer and publish in a number of international journals.

  • Research report on self -reported leadership development needs of Directors of Nursing in Older Peoples Nursing Services funded by the HSE (Principle Investigator)
  • Development of guidance for Palliative Care in Dementia funded by the Irish Hospice Foundation (Principle Investigator)
  •  Development of a Core Competency Framework for Health and Social Care Professionals Working with Older People (ELLAN Project – Funded by Erasmus) Co-Investigator / work package leader)
  •  Research Review on Tackling Delayed Discharge and (re)admission avoidance (Principle Investigator)

I have attended the PhD summer school (a three year programme) provided by EANS. This programme enables contact with other European researchers at PhD level and on completion of the programme, there is potential for collaborative research with nurse researchers across Europe as an EANS research scholar.
