My clinical background is in paediatics and I have over 10 years experience as staff nurse, Clincal Nurse Manager 1 & 2 in paediatrics. I have worked as a Clincal Placement Co-ordinator and Lecturer Practitioner in both general and children's disciplines.
I am currently lecturing in the general undergraduate nursing programme across a broad range of modules. I am year co-ordinator for the BSc 2010 Nursing intake.
Interests: Paediatric neurology, in particular epilepsy; information technology & nursing and the benefits of preadmission visits to prepare children and thier parents for day case surgery.
For my MSc in Nursing I conducted a phenomenological study which explored mothers' needs for information and support following their child's diagnosis of epilepsy. The findings of this research were presented at national and international conferences and through peer reviewed journals.
My Lecturer Practitioner colleagues and I in the School of Nursing & Midwifery, UCC conducted a study which evaluated the role of the Lecturer Practitioner (LP). I presented the findings of this LP study at the RCN international nursing conference both as concurrent paper and poster in 2008.
I was part of an indiciplinary team which developed a pre- admission visit for children (and their families) undergoing day surgery. Children who were scheduled for day surgery were invited to come to the ward for an hour long pre admission visit. A DVD and an information booklet were developed by the team for this initiative. The pre-admission visit was evaluated by parents and result showed how beneficial this visit was for the children and their families involved. The findings of this evaluation study have been presented as concurrent papers and poster in 2008 and 2009. Two publications pertaining to this practice development initiative have been published.
Presently, I am interested in teaching and learning and is currently pursuing a Masters of Arts in Teaching & Learning in Higher Education. For this, I am exploring nursing students' perspectives of integration of information technology into concurrent modules.
