Aine O'Donovan

Biography

Áine O'Donovan is a Senior Lecturer in Mental Health at the School of Nursing and Midwifery and Interim Dean of Undergraduate Studies in the Office of the Deputy President and Registrar. She holds a Bachelors degree from Trinity College Dublin and a MSc and PhD from University College Cork. Prior to beginning work in academia in 2004 she worked in both the private and public health sectors as a mental health nurse.  Áine is Director of Teaching and Learning and she led the School's Athena SWAN committee to gaining its first Bronze award for its achievements in promoting gender equality. Áine leads the Mental Health and Wellbeing research cluster. Her research interests focus on young people and marginalised groups. She has a specific interest in trauma informed models, mental health promotion and prevention, and participatory models of research through partnering with mental health service users to co-produce research. Aine sits on the International Scientific Committee for the European Conference on Mental Health and on the editorial board of Issues in Mental Health Nursing. She has over 70 peer reviewed publications, a h-index of 22 and has received over 850,000 in research grant funding. Research Interests

Áine leads the Mental Health and Well-being research cluster in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. Her research interests focus on youth mental health, with a specific interest in mental health promotion, trauma informed care and mental health service delivery. She has experience of both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, participatory research and the conduct of systematic reviews. She has published extensively on the co-production of research and education with mental health service users, working within, and moving beyond Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) research frameworks. Áine's current research focuses on educational interventions to reduce seclusion, restraint and coercive practices in child and and adolescent mental health services and the introduction of trauma informed care into mental health practice. Previous recently funded studies have included a national project on suicide and self harm awareness among health professionals, an evaluation of peer group clinical supervision for nurses and a study to implement and ascertain the impact of co-produced mental health education with those with lived experience. Áine has published over 70 peer reviewed papers and has a h-index of 22. She sits on the editorial board for Issues in Mental Health Nursing and is referee for several journals including the Journal of Research in Nursing, Archives of Psychiatric Nursing, Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, International Journal of Psychiatric Nursing, European Psychiatry and Journal of Advanced Nursing
