Research Profile

Biography

I attained my general nursing qualification from Whipps Cross Hospital in East London and midwifery qualification from North Hertfordshire Maternity Hospital, Hertfordshire, UK. Thereafter I gained a wide range of experience in general medical and surgical nursing, perioperative nursing (general, plastic and orthopaedic surgery), neurosurgical nursing, neonatal intensive care nursing and drug and alcohol addiction treatment unit. Before entering my academic career I was Clinical Nurse Manager of a general surgery theatre in a larger teaching hospital.

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Nursing in University College Dublin and Registered as a Nurse Tutor with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland. I completed a BA in counselling with the Cork Institute of Technology, Cork, and MSc in Nursing with the University of Manchester, UK and PhD Nursing from University College Cork (UCC).

Since 2002 I have been employed as College Lecturer at the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. I am currently Director of undergraduate practice education and lecturer on both undergraduate and post graduate nursing programmes. My teaching areas are communication skills with undergraduate and postgraduate nursing/midwifery students (in general, midwifery, cancer, palliative care and nurse prescribing areas), patient and family centered care in oncology, palliative care and research principles and practice. I supervise many MSc students and co-supervise PhD students for their research dissertations. I have published widely in the International literature.

Research Interests

My research interests are primarily on cancer care (patient and family centered care), preceptorship, and interpersonal communication skills education. I am a member of the cancer research team within the School of Nursing and Midwifery at UCC which is led by Professor Josephine Hegarty.

Studies completed to date include:
1. PhD study completed in Dec. 2012: Emotional Resistance Building: A grounded theory of how family members of loved ones undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer deal with fear of emotional collapse. Study undertaken in the School of Nursing & Midwifery at University College Cork, under the supervision of Dr Tom Andrews and Professor Josephine Hegarty..
2. Study on patients’ perceptions of how healthcare providers communicate with them and their families following a diagnosis of colorectal cancer, 2014.

3. Preceptorship Study in 2007. Assessing undergraduate nursing students in clinical practice: Do preceptors use assessment strategies?

4. MSc dissertation completed in February, 2004. Translating person-centered care: A case study of preceptor nurses and their teaching practices in acute care areas.
