Research Profile

Elaine Lehane

Biography

Dr Lehane is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Nursing & Midwifery and has 19 years' experience navigating healthcare and higher education. Elaine’s research and scholarly work concentrate on deepening our understanding and application of: (1) the most effective methods for translating evidence into practice to improve clinical outcomes, and (2) the best teaching approaches for evidence-based practice, with a focus on enhancing health professional education. Over the past five years, Elaine has led or co-led four national and international projects, securing €2.9 million in funding. These projects leveraged her methodological expertise in evidence generation, implementation, and translation in the following areas: cancer prevention for individuals with intellectual disabilities, healthcare workforce well-being, breastfeeding support for sustainable population health, and building capacity for teaching evidence-based practice in higher education. Additionally, during this period, she has been a Co-Applicant on six other projects, which collectively received €10.2 million in funding. Elaine has over 120 research outputs with 64 of these in peer reviewed journals, a h-Index of 24 and 2,728 citations according to google scholar.

Dr. Lehane is currently the Vice Dean of Teaching and Learning, overseeing the school’s implementation of the University’s Strategic Goal 2, 'Student Success'. In this role, she draws on her comprehensive experience in teaching and learning, having previously served as Vice-Dean of Postgraduate Education, Programme Director, and External Examiner, as well as leading professional statutory body and university program approval and reapproval processes. Her expertise in developing competency frameworks and educator resources to enhance the teaching of evidence-based practice to healthcare learners have garnered recognition both nationally and internationally.

Elaine served 2 terms on the University Ethics Committee contributing to the development of ethical and research integrity governance of the University. She is educational lead in the national specialist interest group Evidence Based Practice Ireland (EBPI) and member of the International Association for Communication in Healthcare. In 2023, Elaine was awarded the Irish Research Council (IRC) Research Ally of the Year in recognition of her support and mentorship in helping to develop the work and careers of postgraduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early career researchers.

Elaine began her career by training as a nurse, earning a Diploma in General Nursing, and working in acute medical and surgical settings. She is registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland. She also holds a BSc in Nursing, an MSc in Clinical Nursing, a PhD (Medicine & Health), and a Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.

Research Interests

Dr Lehane’s research interests focuses on developing, implementing and sustaining evidence-based practice initiatives to enhance care quality and equity to improve health outcomes. She has specific interest and expertise in participatory action research, evidence synthesis, process evaluation and integrated knowledge translation to ensure best practice scientific approaches to intervention development, implementation and evaluation. Elaine's research programme emphasises cross-boundary collaboration, bringing together diverse stakeholders, particularly in the academic-clinical domain. Her work reflects significant interdisciplinarity, engaging fields such as Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology, Economics, and Ethics. Elaine's collaborative network reaches internationally, including partnerships with four national higher education institutions (QUB, UCD, UL, TCD) and six active international collaborations across Europe and the USA.
