Heidi Howard

Biography

Heidi Carmen Howard is senior lecturer/associate professor at University College Cork (Ireland) working on the policy, ethical, legal, and social issues (PELSI) of new technologies,  especially in biomedicine and data driven sciences.   

Her research focuses on using trans-, multi- and interdisciplinary approaches with a large emphasis on empirical research to study the challenges and implications of novel technologies (e.g. gene editing, next generation sequencing, AI) and their responsible translation for end users and society.Projects include themes such as PELSI of data-driven life science; informed consent for genomics in the clinic and gene editing in research; stakeholder engagement approaches and meaning in debates on germ line gene editing in humans. Recent cutting-edge work has focussed on evaluating large language models for safety regarding chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear information.
 

She is an expert in quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, including foresight and policy analysis. She has extensive experience in developing ethical tools for, and advising different stakeholder groups, as well as engagement of a varied groups from different geographical, cultural and professional contexts in workshops, and seminars. 

Heidi is an accomplished communicator, has published over 85 articles (H-index of 41) in international peer reviewed journals, has taught science and ethics at high school, college and university. She is regularly invited to speak at (inter)national conferences and has consulted for organisations such as the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (USA), Council of Europe Bioethics Committee and works with the European Society of Human Genetics on ethical matters in genomics. She has won over 3 million Euros in competitive research funding. She is dedicated to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the workplace and was an active member of the EDI committee of SciLifeLab (Sweden).
 

Dr. Howard has formal training in both Bioethics (KULeuven, Belgium) and Molecular Genetics (McGill, Canada) and has experience working in different multidisciplinary (inter)national contexts both in Europe and North America. She speaks fluent English, French and passable Spanish and Swedish. Her favourite authors of fiction include Delphine de Vigan, Anna Gavalda, and Margaret Atwood.
