Biography
Irene is a Registered General Nurse (RGN) with a clinical background particularly in the areas of older adults and stroke. Since initial registration Irene has practiced as a nurse in Ireland and Australia. In 2006 while undertaking a Masters programme in Trinity College Dublin Irene also gained a teaching qualification as a Registered Nurse Tutor (RNT) with An Bord Altranais. Irene completed a PhD in 2015 and is actively interested in stroke research as well as clinical practice issues. Irene is committed to integrating various teaching methodologies while simultaneously challenging student thinking, so that students are prepared to manage the complexities of nursing practice. From 2005-2007 Irene held a full time Lecturer Practitioner post within the School of Nursing & Midwifery and from September 2007 to present, Irene holds a full time Lecturing post in the School.
Research Interests
Irene is a College Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery in University College Cork. Irene successfully defended her PhD thesis at University College Cork in 2015. Irene received an MSc in Clinical Health Science Education from Trinity College Dublin. She has a strong clinical background, particularly in the areas of older adults and chronic illness. Irene has a keen interest in understanding the biopsychosocial impact of chronic illness. Irene has completed a number of multidisciplinary research studies pertaining to older adults, stroke and clinical practice. Irene is also a registered nurse tutor with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland and she has experience in developing simulation and online modules. Irene is interested in teaching methodologies, namely Problem Based Learning (PBL) and Simulation. Irene has collaborated with Dr. Terry Barrett in University College Dublin with regard to flexible learning formats for students. Irene is a member of the Clinical Research & Development Group-Department of Medicine for Older People for the Cork Teaching hospitals and the Healthy Ageing Research Group in the School of Nursing & Midwifery. Irene was data collector for the Irish Heart Foundation National Audit of Stroke Services (2008). This was commissioned by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Trinity College Dublin in association with the Department of Health and Children. This was the first and largest ever study on stroke care in Ireland which shapes Irish stroke services. Also as part of the Irish Hospice Foundation’s Changing Minds: Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care for People with Dementia programme, funded by Atlantic Philantrophies, Irene was the guidance lead for the guidance document on the management of hydration and nutrition in palliative care for people with dementia.Research Grants
