Teaching Interests

Irene is Chair of Learning and Teaching in the School of Nursing & Midwifery since 2014 and also represents the School on the College of Medicine and Health Learning and Teaching Committee.
Since 2005, Irene has designed, coordinated, and marked all module assessments and examinations. Irene has contributed to and led the development of formative and summative assessments for several modules (UG & PG). The range of assessment includes 8 assessment methods which demonstrates Irene's capacity and coordination across multiple modules and programmes. Irene has championed live and simulated clinical assessment in which demonstrates her commitment to research-led teaching. Irene has designed innovative assessments to develop problem-solving abilities and critical thinking competencies to support graduates and pioneer the top ten skills that employers have identified. Building on her MSc in Clinical Health Sc Education (Trinity College Dublin), Irene spearheaded ‘Novel Approaches to Develop Clinical Competencies by merging 2 teaching methodologies’ which she has published as 2 peer reviewed journal articles and secured additional NAIRTL funding. Irene has developed and delivered Interprofessional learning (IPL) at BSc (NU3079) and PG level (CG6002 and IPL workshop-Understanding Dementia Together) informed ‘with and by’ advocacy organisations.
Irene's teaching philosophy is to assist students develop strong linkage between teaching and research and to instil critical thinking in students to develop questioning ability. Irene draws on a number of formats for teaching namely from lecture style to tutorial to leading clinical skills laboratory sessions and simulations. Irene utilises a variety of teaching methods including lectures, demonstration, team teaching, group work, buzz groups, role play, virtual learning environment, brainstorming, case studies and include exercises for experiential learning. Irene is module leader for a number of modules and her key responsibilities entail the organisation of the module, to create and/or maintain syllabus ensuring the syllabus meets appropriate standards for the level of the programme and to discuss the module content and assessment process with the team.
Irene was year co-ordinator from 2008-2012 (2008 intake of undergraduate nursing students). This role has a number of responsibilities related to teaching, coordination, student support and administration. The role of year co-ordinator is primarily to provide information and explanations regarding course information, examination/assignment scheduling, examination processes. As well as being an identifiable person for students to communicate to, Irene co-ordinates the day to day administration of the year at the School of Nursing and Midwifery as well as other departments within the college e.g. the examination office regarding booking of venues and invigilators for in class exams. The role also involves liaising with module leaders regarding exam dates and preparation for in-class tests and co-ordinate the return of marks and feedback sheets to the students.
Irene was invited to be External Examiner for the PGDip/MSc pre-registration in Nursing at Glyndwr University 2022. Irene reviewed the launch and delivery the accredited programme, ensuring alignment with academic regulations frameworks and academic quality
