Research Profile

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer in Healthcare Ethics in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork and Visiting Professor in the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Surrey, UK (2018 - 2021).I am a graduate of UCC (BA, 1980; MA, 1983; PhD, 2001) and my doctoral thesis in philosophy was published in 2007 (Dennett and Ricoeur on the Narrative Self, New York: Humanity Books). Other publications include, Nursing Ethics: Feminist Perspectives (co-edited with Helen Kohlen); End-of-Life Care: Ethics and Law, 2011, Cork: Cork University Press (with M. Donnelly, D. Dooley, L. Campbell and D. Smith); An Ethical Framework for End-of-Life Care, 8 Study Sessions, 2010 (Dublin: Irish Hospice Foundation. Available online at: End-of-Life Care Ethics and Law 2011 )(with M. Donnelly, D. Dooley, L. Campbell and D. Smith) and Nursing Ethics, Irish Cases and Concerns, 2012, 2nd Edition, Dublin: Gill and MacMillan (with D. Dooley).  My book chapters and journal articles address topics such as the role of ethics in clinical practice, the professional-patient relationship, professionals' experiences of moral distress and nursing and midwifery ethics.I am a member of the  Editorial Board of the International Journal of Nursing Ethics and the Advisory Board of the International Care Ethics Observatory, University of Surrey. I addressed the Irish Citizens' Assembly established by the Houses of the Oireachtas on the topic of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution where I presented a paper on 'A Woman's Right to Choose: the moral arguments' (https://www.citizensassembly.ie/en/Meetings/Joan-McCarthy-Paper.pdf). I have also addressed the Joint Committee on Health and Children (24 October 2013) where I presented on End-of-Life Care in Ireland: Ethical Challenges and Solutions. I was recently Visiting Scholar in the Hastings Center NY and Yale Bioethics Center, CT (April-May 2014). I have collaborated on a number of national and international research projects in healthcare ethics and have a consultative role on several committees involved in clinical care and health research. My research interests are wide ranging in healthcare ethics with a particular interest in theoretical and empirical research in two areas: 1) ethical issues that arise in relation to death and dying; 2) nursing and midwifery ethics; the moral distress of health professionals; feminist perspectives on bioethics.

Research Interests

Healthcare ethics is a relatively new multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary field which is concerned with (1) clinical practice as well as (2) theoretical and (3) empirical research. My research strategy is underpinned by a philosophical and personal commitment to integrating these three elements in order to advance the body of knowledge that is healthcare ethics.

To this end, I continue to apply theoretical (ethical knowledge) to clinical practice in my teaching and writing and to carry out empirical research into ethical issues that arise in practice. For example, I was the lead investigator and co-author of a national project to develop An Ethical Framework for End-of-Life Care (2010) for the Irish Hospice Foundation  (with M. Donnelly, D. Dooley, L. Campbell and D. Smith). Accessible from:This multidisciplinary project is the first of its kind in Ireland, drawing as it does on different academic disciplines, theoretical knowledge of ethics in end of life care, and qualitative and quantitative research with health professionals and the general population.

 I currently lead the School Research Theme, End-of-Life Health care Ethics. For further details, see

http://www.ucc.ie/en/nursingmidwifery/research/endoflife/

I also research and write in the areas of applied ethics generally, nursing and midwifery ethics and feminist ethics

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

My precise objectives in teaching vary depending on the student cohort with whom I am working, as do my methods. Identifying students' progression is an integral part of my ongoing engagement with a group so that I gain a better diagnostic sense of the class's understanding of key concepts and the success (or otherwise) of my own teaching. Every session with a group of students is structured to respond to the key objectives for that session.

Student evaluation, self-evaluation, peer evaluation and the views of stakeholders are important indicators for me of the success, or otherwise, of any courses that I teach and, over the past seventeen years, I consistently evaluated these through a variety of forms. In turn, I have modified the delivery style, content and forms of assessment in response to the feedback I have received.  The evaluation may be formal or informal and has included self-report questionnaires administered by myself or my colleagues. I have also received positive feedback on the assessment of the modules I teach from several external examiners and the independent reviewer of the BSc undergraduate programme.

Relationship of teaching to research.

  • designed, developed and coordinated the world's first MSc in End-of-Life Healthcare Ethics;
  • designed undergraduate and postrgraduate courses in healthcare ethics for nurses and doctors; compiled Course Readers with appropriate content for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (e.g., BSc Nursing Studies; Gerontology; Critical Care)
  • included my current empirical research in end of life care into course content
  • coauthored a nursing ethics text, Nursing Ethics: Irish cases and concerns, which has been adopted into the curricula of a number of other universities at home and abroad
  • worked closely with the School Subject Librarian to ensure that key texts and recent texts are available to students for appropriate (short/long term) borrowing.
