BIOGRAPHY
Research Interests
My research strategy involves the initiation and development of interdisciplinary nursing research in collaboration with academic colleagues and in partnership with health service practitioners that will benefit the people we care for.
To this end I have been involved in the development and evaluation of “a pre admission visit” for children (and their families) who are undergoing minor day surgery in the Mercy University Hospital. This has had a major impact on my discipline as it had empowered the ward staff to implement a nursing practice that benefits themselves and the families that they care for. The findings have been disseminated at conferences and through articles in journals. This research initiative has had a major impact and we have received many queries from other colleagues hoping to implement a similar pre- admission visit in their hospitals.
Presently I am involved in investigating the area of childhood vaccinations. Recently there have been many changes to childhood vaccination scheduled which had led to confusion among nursing staff and the public at large. In collaboration with a link lecturer and a clinical nurse specialist in this area I am writing articles for an Irish Nursing Journal (approval from Journal obtained) which we hope will make the issue of vaccinations in Ireland more understandable for nursing staff. We also hope to do some nursing research in this area to add to the rather small body of nursing knowledge in this area.
• As part of my MSc in Advanced Nursing, I investigated the lived experienced of newly qualified staff nurses on clinical placement in the first 6 months post qualification. This was a very valuable piece of research and rich data was obtained from the participants. The findings of this research were presented at conferences and through peer reviewed journal. The findings were also presented at local level and as a result changes I the support structures for newly qualified staff were initiated,
• I was part of an indiciplinary team which developed a pre- admission visit for children (and their families) undergoing day surgery. Children who were scheduled for day surgery were invitee to come to the ward for ah hour long pre –admission visit. A DVD and booklet were developed by the team for this initiative. The pre-admission visit was evaluated by parents and result showed how beneficial this visit was for the children and their families involved.
• Presently I am involved in looking into the whole the area of childhood vaccinations. As this is a topical area within the HSE presently, our interdisciplinary hopes to add to the body of knowledge in this are. To date we have written a paper for a nursing journal with paper 2 almost complete. It is hoped that these papers will help nursing colleagues understand the changed and of the need for vigilance in the whole area of childhood vaccination.
