Mohamad Saab

Biography

Dr Mohamad M. Saab is a Lecturer in the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery. Previously, he worked as an Oncology Nurse (2008–2011), Research Assistant (2009–2011), Palliative Care Advanced Nurse Practitioner (2011–2013), and Lecturer and Clinical Instructor (2013–2014). In UCC, Dr Saab worked as a part-time Lecturer and Research Assistant and Project Coordinator (2014–2017) on a number of funded projects including: A Systematic Review of the Clinical and Economic Literature and a Budget Impact Analysis of Any New Guideline Recommendations to Inform the Planned Update of National Clinical Guideline No. 1 – National Early Warning Score (NEWS) for the Irish Health System (funded by the Department of Health); the Men’s Cancer prevention and Health literacy: The MeCHanic Study (funded by the Irish Cancer Society); and the Independent Programme Evaluation of the Leaders for Compassionate Care Programme (Funded by the Health Service Executive).

Dr Saab holds a BSc in Nursing with distinction (2005–2008) and MSc in Advanced Practice Nursing (2009–2013) from the American University of Beirut, Rafic Hariri School of Nursing in Lebanon. He is a Registered General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI; 2018–Present) and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health (2008–Present). In 2014, Dr Saab was granted a studentship from the UCC School of Nursing and Midwifery to undertake a PhD in Nursing by publication which he completed in December 2017 with eight papers (all published). His thesis is titled: “Enhancing Men’s Awareness of Testicular Disorders Using a Virtual Reality Intervention: The E-MAT Study” conducted in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and the School of Public Health in UCC. Dr Saab got recently shortlisted for a €614,752 Health Research Board – Definitive Intervention and Feasibility Award grant to develop and test the E-MAT study further (36 months, awaiting final decision).

Dr Saab is a holder of a Postgraduate Certificate (2016–2017) and Postgraduate Diploma (2017–2018) in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education from the UCC Centre for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning. He is currently teaching on several undergraduate and postgraduate modules and serves as the ANP Programme Coordinator – Year 1.

Dr Saab is research active in: men’s health promotion; technology in health promotion; health disparities including gender and sexual minorities; cancer awareness and survivorship; palliative care; systematic and integrative literature reviews; qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research; survey design; intervention design and modelling; and theory development and testing. He
 currently has over 20 publications and several manuscripts that are under review and in preparation. He currently serves as editor in the International Journal of Men’s Social and Community Health and reviewer in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, Nursing Research, Cancer Nursing, and Psycho-oncology. Over the past five years, he presented his work in over 30 national and international conferences and won multiple awards. 

Dr Saab is a member of the NMBI, Order of Nurses in Lebanon, Irish Research Nurses Network, Men’s Health Forum in Ireland, and Sigma Theta Tau International. He is also actively involved in a number of school and university committees and research groups including the Student Experience Committee, the Athena Swan Committee (Departmental Bronze Award), the Enhancing Cancer Awareness and Survivorship Programmes (E.CASP) research group, and the UCC Health Matters – Sexual Health Working Group.

Research Interests

I currently have a total of 22 publications including 15 full-length peer-reviewed articles, four co-authored national research reports, two theses, and one systematic review protocol. In addition, I have a number of manuscripts that are currently under review and in preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

I am research active and published in the following areas: awareness of testicular disorders; testicular cancer survivorship; men’s health literacy; cancer risk reduction; theoretical framework development; virtual reality in health promotion; experiences of patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction; palliative care in older adults; and Early Warning Systems education for nurses.

Outreach Activities

 Description

Involved in a number of fundraisers for organisations such as Pieta House, Gay Project Cork, Irish Guide Dogs, and refugee relief charities.

Volunteered as a war relief floor clerk at the Children Cancer Center during the July war.

LGBTQ+ rights activist and editor of the health segment of “Barra [Out]” magazine in Lebanon.

Delivered the Markie Keating Foundation’s “Your Health Your Choice” campaign in secondary schools (900 students targeted in over 15 schools located in underserved areas in Cork City).

Teaching Interests

I have experience in teaching and assessment in general nursing and have actively contributed across a number of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes in and outside my area of specialisation. These include: oncology nursing; palliative care nursing; nursing leadership and management; nursing theory; research methods; health assessment; pharmacology; pathophysiology; clinical skills; and simulation.

I am also experienced in module and curriculum development and the use of innovative technologies and modern pedagogical approaches (e.g. hybrid and online platforms).
