Biography
Dr. Mary Rose Day is a registered nurse, midwife, and public health nurse and an honours graduate from the School of Nursing and Midwifery in UCC. She holds a diploma in management, postgraduate degree in Public Health Nursing, Masters in Social Service Administration and a Doctorate Nursing in the area of self-neglect. She is a College Lecturer, co-ordinator of the Postgraduate Certificate in Nursing in the Community and teaches across postgraduate (Public Health Nursing/Nursing in the Community & Gerontological Nursing) and undergraduate programmes with particular focus on public health nursing and older adults. She is involved in postgraduate interdisciplinary training on elder abuse and self-neglect in partnership with the School of Social Work in UCC and the Senior Case Worker from the HSE. Mary Rose has held a range of nursing and management posts in acute and community settings. She supervises students’ research projects in undergraduate, postgraduate and masters programmes.
Her areas of expertise include self-neglect, adults and older people, life story work, family carers and community nursing. She has a particular interest in people who are marginalised/ disadvantaged/ vulnerable or living in poverty across communities. She has numerous publications in both peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed journals and co-authored book chapters. She has been disseminating her research findings, presenting workshops and symposia at national and international conferences since her initial appointment to UCC in 2004. She has been an invited guest speaker to CARDI, National Centre for Protection of Older People and the HSE. She has numerous publications in both peer reviewed and non-peer reviewed journals and co-authored book chapters. At a national level she makes a contribution to the development and enhancement of public health nursing through the Institute of Community Health Nursing (ICHN). She and is a member of the ICHN Research implementation group working with academic and clinical nurse leaders nationally in supporting and facilitating evidence based practice and public health nursing. She is also a member of the Institute of Community Health Nursing (ICHN), Association of Gerontolgical Nursing and the Ageing Research Cluster of the Institute for Social Sciences in the 21st Century. She is co-ordinating ISS21 Ageing cluster since April 2014.
