She holds an MSc in Nursing, a BSc in Nursing Studies, a Diploma in Nursing Science and Professional Certificates in both Nursing Management and Teaching in Higher Education.  For her PhD, Nicola studied help-seeking behavior for chronic pain with a particular emphasis on behavioral theory. Her research interests include; Health behaviour (including healthcare decision making), pain management in older adults, instrument development and healthy ageing. She supervises PhD and MSc students in these areas.

She led the development of the first online Postgraduate Diploma in Gerontology in Ireland, which commenced in 2013, in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. In conjunction with the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care, she has developed an online course; ‘Introduction to Advance Care Directives’ for open access use.
