Dr. Serena FitzGerald currently works as a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork. Within this role she is responsible for providing expertise in the development of e- learning. Serena is the programme coordinator for first year BSc Nursing and Midwifery programmes. 

She currently teaches on undergraduate modules in the areas of research, chronic diseases, medication management, fundamental knowledge and skills for nursing practice, and nursing management of challenging acute nursing episodes. Serena is module coordinator at postgraduate level for Evidence Based Cervical Screening, and also teaches on e-learning modules. She also led in the development of the Postgraduate Diploma in Practice Nursing. Serena currently supervises at both Masters and PhD level.


Serena holds a PhD in the area of HPV cancer prevention and a Masters in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, UCC.


Serena is a Registered General Nurse (RGN) with a clinical background in practice nursing, and in the areas of older adults, cardiology and stroke rehabilitation. 

Research Interests

Serena is a member of the Cancer Research Group E◊CASP (Enhancing Cancer Awareness and Survivorship Programmes)

The two major research foci within the E◊CASP are:
1.Cancer awareness within the broader spectrum of health promotion
2.Support of patients and significant others on the cancer survivorship journey, with a particular focus on understanding the needs of individuals on the cancer journey and the development and testing of targeted interventions for individuals with cancer and their family/loved ones.

In March 2015, Serena successfully defended her PhD thesis titled: "The Human Papillomavirus and Cancer: A Multiphase Study Investigating Preventative Behaviours in Young Males".  In 2017, Serena was awarded a Masters Degree for her dissertation on teaching and learning in sexual health education.
   

Current Research Projects

1. Randomised Control Trial measuring the impact of the advance care planning in six long –term care sites in the South of Ireland (Collaborator)Aim: To measuring the impact of the advance care planning in six long –term care sites in the South of Ireland. Major focus on Dementia Palliative Care

2.  An Examination of the Effectiveness of a Proficiency Based Progression Tracheostomy Training Programme on Health Care Professionals’ Clinical Performance in a Simulated Context (Co-applicant)Aim: The aim of this study is twofold: firstly to develop, validate and test in a simulated context a set of metrics associated with tracheostomy care. Secondly, to determine the effectiveness of proficiency based progression (PBP) training for tracheostomy care, as compared to standard training on learner’s performance of tracheostomy care procedures in the simulated context.

3. Audit and diagnostic coding of dementia in General Practice: A rapid knowledge synthesis (Collaborator)Aim: To rapidly synthesise international knowledge regarding audit and diagnostic coding of dementia in General Practice to inform the development of a research and evaluation stream specific to audit and coding of dementia in General Practice in Ireland.

4. Evaluation of the Diabetes Nurse Specialist Service in General Practice (Collaborator)Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the DNS service of patient outcomes and patient experience using a mixed methodology study design.
