Research Profile

Sean Joseph Kelleher

Biography

Dr. Kelleher qualified as a RGN from The University School of Nursing, Bonn, Germany in 1996 and has since worked on various intensive care units both in Germany and in Ireland. Appointed a Lectureship in the  School of Nursing & Midwifery UCC in 2003, he currently teaches across the Undergraduate BSc. Nursing programme and coordinates the PGD in Intensive Care Nursing. Dr Kelleher is actively involved in research ranging from critical care  nursing to  facilitators and barriers to international nurse mobility. He completed his doctorate in 2017 which  focused on the Determinants of Intention to Study Abroad among Nursing and Midwifery Students. Dr. Kelleher is the departmental ERASMUS+ coordinator and co-chair of the school's Global Engagement and Internationalisation committee which aims to foster strategic international links and further enhance  UCC’s involvement on the international stage. Dr. Kelleher has spearheaded the development of  new and innovative nursing programmes such as  BSc Nursing International with German, and the BSc. Nursing Studies (For German registered Nurses).  In 2017 and again in 2022 Dr. Kelleher, together with colleagues in UCD secured HSE tenders to develop, deliver and assess a National Foundation Education Module in Critical Care Nursing which facilitates the delivery of a standardised education and training of nurses working in Intensive Care units across Ireland, and serves as a stepping stone to further Post Graduate education.

Research Interests

My research interests relate to :
Comtemporary issues in Critical Care Nursing. This was the basis for my MSc Study in which I conducted an observational study to examine the open endotracheal suctioning practices of critical care nurses.  The study, and subsequent publication, was influential in a review of suctioning practices domestically and has received numerous citations in international peer reviewed journals.
A subsequent study and publication on ED doctors and nurses knowledge and attitudes regarding substance use and substance users has  similarly been cited internationally and continues to receive much clinical attention.

In 2017 UCC and UCD in collaboration with the ONMSD rolled out the country's first National Foundation Module in Critical Care Nursing. An outcomes study on the perceived benefits of the programme is currently underway (March 2022).

I am also very interested in research relating to international student mobility. This was the basis of my doctoral thesis in which I applied the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to explore the determinants of nursing and midwifery students' intentions to study abroad and to predict intention. I hope to apply the recommendations that have derived from this mixed methods study to the development of educational programmes that foster an interest in international mobility among students.
