Teresa Wills

Biography

Dr Teresa Wills is a college lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University College Cork. She holds a BSc (Honours) Degree from Dublin City University, MSc in Nursing from the RCN Manchester and Doctorate in Nursing from University College Cork. Additionally, she holds a Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Teaching and Learning from University College Cork. 

Dr Wills is involved in the delivery and development of both undergraduate and postgraduate nurse education in the school. She is module leader and teaches on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, with a focus on infection prevention and control, academic writing,  fundamental nursing practice, simulation, venepuncture and cannulation, physical assessment, basic life support, visual thinking strategies and gerontological nursing. Dr Wills has practice development links to the Bon Secours Hospital, Mount Desert Hospital and Bandon Community Hospital. She currently serves as a member of the Irish Heart Foundation, Ireland and recertifies BLS instructors within the College of Medicine and Health, UCC and HSE.
 

She has held many senior leadership roles within the School of Nursing and Midwifery, UCC. These have included Director of the BSc Undergraduate Education Programme (2019 - 2022), Co-ordinator of Technology Enhanced Learning (2014 - 2019) and Programme Coordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma in Gerontological Nursing Programme (2005 – 2019). 
She has led, engaged and collaborated on numerous initiatives within the school and university. Dr Wills laid the foundation for the generation of new academic programmes and held significant departmental responsibility in developing and implementing a model for online and blended learning. She led the growth and development of 2 new online programmes, the first within the school and described as pioneering in novel approaches to radically changing the pedagogy of teaching & learning within the School and University. She has extensive experience of curriculum development in higher education consistent with National, University, College of Medicine and Health School Strategies. Dr Wills has led on significant university policy changes and curriculum reform to enhance the integrity of the undergraduate programmes ensuing students are fit for purpose and fit for practice. 

Currently, she is an Academic Integrity Champion within University College Cork. As the only Academic Integrity Champion within the school, she strengthens core student learning with the development of transversal skills and is actively involved in fostering academic integrity amongst Year 1 undergraduate students by using existing resources within UCC and working in collaboration with the Skills Centre, UCC. This initiative reinforces UCC’s efforts to spread engagement with and understanding of academic integrity and contributes to UCC’S Connected Curriculum framework.

Dr Wills is an active and engaged member of a number of School and University Committees and research groups (e.g. UCC Mitigation Committee; BSc Undergraduate Committee; School Executive Committee; Joint Steering Group Committee, Learning and Teaching Committee among others). She is an active member of the Ageing Integrated Research cluster within the School of Nursing and Midwifery and Interdisciplinary Research Group, within the College of Medicine and Health at UCC. She was an external examiner for Trinity College, Dublin, School of Nursing and Midwifery. 

Research Interests 
Dr Wills has supervised 26 MSc students to completion and is currently supervising 1 MSc by Research student and 2 PhD students.

She has significant, consistent, and continuing output of research and scholarly publications in leading internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals. Her publications and research projects reflect interdisciplinary collaboration in translational research, implementation science and aligns with UCC Futures Research Framework.
She has a number of manuscripts that are currently under review and in preparation for publication in peer-reviewed journals.  She is research active in interdisciplinary learning research, nursing education, visual thinking strategies and academic writing in undergraduate nurse and midwifery education. Other topics include electronic competency assessment, older adult and the development of proficiency based performance metrics. 
As part of her role in dissemination and impact, her research experiences translates across: working part of research teams on HRB/HSE funded projects, presenting papers at national and international conferences; numerous publications in both peer reviewed and non peer reviewed journals and co-authorship of chapters in books.
