Research Interests

Research Strategy
Nationally and locally a research strategy for nursing and midwifery has been developed. The Catherine McAuley School of Nursing & Midwifery creates a research environment that enables and supports the development of research.  Chronic Health Care Issues & Older Adult has emerged as one of the 5 unifying themes within the school. My research interests have focused on the older adult,  life story work and obesity.

The research undertaken on Life Story Work provides a unique knowledge about people’s past and present life and can be used to promote quality person centred care in clinical practice. The guidelines on Life Story Work provide a welcome addition to the nursing literature and research evidence to support staff in engaging people in Life Story Work. My expertise in Life story work has led me to develop a workshop for Postgraduate Gerontological students to support practice development. I am now working in the capacity as a facilitator across communities in implementing and supporting the development of life story work in practice. This research and collaboration has enhanced the profile of the Catherine McAuley School of Nursing & Midwifery both nationally and internationally.

As part of my Master studies I undertook research on handwashing. Reducing the incidence and controlling infection is high on the political and scientific agenda both nationally and internationally. There is a need for an enhanced and unequivocal appreciation of the prevention and control of infections by all healthcare professionals. The research undertaken on handwashing has allowed me the opportunity to publish articles and present at conferences to disseminate my findings on this important topic area. As part of a working group within the School of Nursing & Midwifery, we collated a submission document in relation to the draft HIQA National Infection Prevention and Control (2008) document this year. This document will lead to a new future in the management and control of infection in the Irish healthcare system and will provide a basis for continuous quality improvement.

As part of my Doctorate studies, I undertook research on obesity. Obesity is an emerging healthcare epidemic affecting virtually all age and socio-economic groups both nationally and internationally. It is one of the most serious and prevalent diseases of the 21st century.   Given the escalating global health problem of obesity and its co-morbidities, the need to re-appraise its management is more compelling than ever. The research undertaken on obesity has allowed me the opportunity to publish articles and present at conferences to disseminate my findings on this important topic area.
