Research Profile

BIOGRAPHY

Professor Gill Chard was appointed Head of Occupational Therapy at University College Cork in 2007. She had practiced as an occupational therapist for over 20 years before moving into higher education in 1994. Her clinical experience spans acute care, community and social services, medicine for the elderly, stroke rehabilitation and psychosocial group work for voluntary organizations. Her research interests focus on two areas: research utilization and knowledge transfer, including barriers to becoming evidence-based practitioners; and the impact of environments on occupational engagement, particularly for those with dementia living in long term residential care. She is a qualitative researcher with a particular interest in phenomenology and the use of narratives and photovoice. She is an accredited Assessment of Motor and Process Skills (AMPS) trainer and has used the AMPS clinically and in research. She has a wide range of publications and is on the editorial review boards for the British Journal of Occupational Therapy and the Canadian Journal of Occupational Therapy.

Research Interests

Qualitative research methods including phenomenological research, photovoice and the use of digital images are of particular interest. Some current and past projects include:

Living to tell the tale: Narratives of occupational engagement, creativity and living with breast cancer

Bridging the research into practice gap: Supporting therapists' engagement in evidence based practice

A generic Electronic Assistive Technology (EAT) package for Persons with Quadriplegia

The personal meaningfulness of bathing to community dwelling older adults: A qualitative study of occupational therapy assessment referrals

Exploring occupation and its meaning in the context of homelessness
