Research Profile

Suzanne Timmons

Biography

Dr. Suzanne Timmons qualified from UCC and trained in Ireland, the UK and the US. She is a geriatrician and senior lecturer in the Centre for Gerontology and Rehabilitation in UCC. She works 50% clinically, in the acute hospital setting and in rehabilitation. She is currently the Clinical Lead for Dementia for the Republic of Ireland.

Her academic commitments include being programme coordinator for the MSc in Older Person Rehabilitation and the new MSc in Dementia, as well as the supervision of MSc and doctoral students. She has a keen interest in postgraduate interdisciplinary education and research. Her research interests focus on neurodegenerative disease in older people.

Research Interests

My research interests focus on neurodegenerative disease in older people, particularly the overlap between dementia/delirium and behaviours that challenge in acute hospitals.
I was the co-lead for INAD, the Irish National Audit of Dementia (2013-2014) and the Northern Ireland Audit of Dementia (2014/2015); and am a founding member (2014) and current President (2016) of the Irish Delirium Society.
I have completed HRB-funded research projects into the course and long-term outcome of older people with dementia admitted to acute hospitals, and the incidence and indicators of in-hospital delirium in older people, and have recently validated a delirium screening tool for use in the ED. I am the lead for a Genio/HSE co-funded healthcare improvement project to promote integrated care of people with dementia in Cork (2014-2017).
Other current research in the area of dementia includes anti-psychotic prescribing in Nursing Homes, respite provision to people with dementia (in collaboration with DCU), and palliative care needs in people with dementia.

I run a multidisciplinary movement disorder clinic in Cork and my research interests in Parkinson’s disease include neurobiochemistry (currently investigating signalling pathways in peripheral blood cells as potential biomarkers for PD), altered gut microbiota in PD, and symptom control/ palliative care. I led the development of the recently published National Guidelines for Palliative Care in Parkinson's disease (2016). My current research is focussed on anticipatory grief in PD, palliative care needs of people with advanced PD residing in Nursing Homes, and the cost of informal care in PD (in collaboration with the School of Nursing).

I am currently leading or collaborating in clinical trials on augmented physical activity in older people in hospital to reduce functional decline; food supplementation for frail older people in long-term care (led by Eldermet group); and magnesium supplementation to enhance cognition (led by Dept. of Anatomy, UCC).

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

I am the programme coordinator for the postgraduate programme in Older Person Rehabilitation at UCC, which I set up in 2011. This is the only interdisciplinary programme of its kind in Ireland/ UK; offered to healthcare workers including nurses, doctors, and therapists. It is fully modularised and provides flexibility for students, with a range of degree programmes and CPD modules, so students can study at their own pace, progressing to higher levels or exiting at lower levels easily. Interdisciplinary working and respect is a core programme principle, along with person-focussed rehabilitation and goal-setting.

I am the module cooordinator for several taught modules, including generic rehabilitation, and falls/gait and movement disorders. I also coordinate the research dissertation module, clinical placement module and a personal study module.

I am a member of the School of Medicine Postgraduate and Continuing Eduction Committee; and am involved in national education initiatives to improve the care of older people, including the Certificate in Medicine for the Elderly, and
the National Clinical Programme for Older People's

Specialist Geriatric Team Guidance for Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment.

I provide lectures for RCPI national training such as Specialist Registrar training days, Consultant Physician Masterclasses, and am an external reviewer for RCPI educational modules and training curricula.
