Her academic commitments include being Programme Director for the MSc in Older Person Rehabilitation, since 2011, and the new MSc in Dementia, since 2018, as well as the supervision of research MSc and doctoral students. She has a keen interest in postgraduate interdisciplinary education and research. Her research interests focus on neurodegenerative disease in older people, particularly dementia and PD, spanning basic science translation, diagnostic tool validation, health service research (especially models of care), clinical trials, technology in rehab, exercise and risk reduction.
Acute hospital dementia/delirium: I was the co-lead for INAD, the Irish National Audit of Dementia (2013-2014), the Northern Ireland Audit of Dementia (2014/2015) and INAD-2 (2019-2020); and President of the Irish Delirium Society (2016-2018). I have completed HRB-funded research projects into the course and long-term outcome of older people with dementia admitted to acute hospitals; the incidence and indicators of in-hospital delirium in older people; and validated a delirium screening tool for use in the ED. I led the Genio/HSE co-funded healthcare improvement project to promote integrated care of people with dementia in Cork (2014-2018). I lead several active projects in delirium-dementia overlaps.
Other current research in the area of dementia includes psychotropic prescribing in Nursing Homes (I I also co-led National Clinical Guideline No. 21, on this topic) and palliative care needs in people with dementia - I currently am the co-PI for a Horizon Europe project (InTouch) on palliative care for people with dementia in residential care, and partner in another Horizon Europe grant (AI4HOPE) on the use of technology for palliative care for people with dementia living at home.
I run a multidisciplinary movement disorder clinic in Cork and my research interests in Parkinson’s disease include neurobiochemistry, altered gut microbiota, and symptom control / palliative care. I led the development of a National Guidelines for Palliative Care in Parkinson's disease (2016). My current research is focussed on non-invasive monitoring of motor function in PD (JPND and industry/EI funding) and national health service provision (HRB funding).
I am the coordinator of an Erasmus Knowledge Alliance project (chAnGE) to develop bite-sized online learning in climate change adaptation and resilience, for healthcare workers who work with older people. (2023-2026).
I was a partner in an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership to develop an online MSc in Active Ageing and Age Friendly Society (2020-2023), working with partners in Finland, Austria, Greece, Portugal and Slovenia. We are hoping to roll out the programme to students in 2025.
I conduct research into effective teaching across topics such as dementia and falls.

Teaching Interests
I am the programme coordinator for the postgraduate programme in Older Person Rehabilitation at UCC (2011), the only interdisciplinary programme of its kind in Ireland/ UK, which is offered to healthcare workers including nurses, doctors, and therapists, and the postgraduate programme in Dementia at UCC (2018). I am the module coordinator for several taught modules in these.I am the coordinator of an Erasmus Knowledge Alliance project (chAnGE) to develop bite-sized online learning in climate change adaptation and resilience, for healthcare workers who work with older people.
