Research Interests
My main research interest is studying the oral cavity. The oral cavity is a complex niche, reflected by its complex microbial community.
My PhD, completed in 2018, characterized the oral microbiota of infants from birth to three years of age in a longitudinal followed cohort. I investigated the impact of birth modality on the oral microbiota of these infants, and the impact of the maternal oral microbiota on these infants.
Secondly, a cross-sectional study was undertaken to investigate the oral microbiota in a cohort of children from 12-71 months, to generate insight into the risk factors of disease progression (Early Childhood Caries). This research was based in the Cork University Dental School and Hospital, Cork University Maternity Hospital and in the Microbiology/APC Microbiome Institute in UCC.
This microbiota data collected constitutes a developing ‘picture’ and a bank of information for future studies on prevention of dental caries, and promotion of oral health in Irish children. The goal of this research is to identify the oral microbiome in health and disease alongside the factors that are associated with the development of both states with the ultimate goal of developing new effective methods of preventing disease through cultivating a healthy microbiome in young children.
