Susan Joyce

Biography

Dr Susan Joyce  (H index=46, >6724 citations) graduated with a B.Sc (joint hons) from Maynooth University in Biology and Mathematics and a research PhD in host-microbe interactions. She was awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship to examine cis and trans acting factors affecting mRNA synthesis and  gene expression at the Ecole Normal Superieure, Paris which included a stint at the Max Planck Institute, Berlin. Before coming to UCC, Dr Joyce was a postdoctoral scientist at the University of Bath, UK (Leverhulme, BBSRC funded) and at Trinity College Dublin. 

Susan Joyce (BSc, PhD, CM, PGCE) is Senior Lecturer at UCC SEFS and a PI in the UCC Food Institute and an investigator at APC Microbiome Ireland. Her research interests revolve around metabolism and altered human, host and microbial metabolic pathways, with food, that can influence health and disease. She leads a metabolomics focused research group, with expertise in diverse areas of host response through small molecule analysis (MS applications), cellular systems, gene expression and signalling readout, clinical interphase, microbial associations in terms of strain isolation, functional and phenotypic characterization including their metabolites and genetics.  Areas currently  under investigation include (1)  metabolomic approach to identify novel biomarkers of microbial  dietary ingredients in fermentation  and (2) metabolomic signatures in deciphering health and ageing (3) specific microbial enzyme inhibition and applications to alter metabolomic signatures towards healthy weight gain.  Susan is a recipient of DAFM and SFI funding. She is a partner in the FP7 project SOPHIA, with a focus on obesity. She represents her School and APC Microbiome Ireland in the Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) CABALA for health, where she is a partner. She has published over 104 articles including publications in leading journals including Angewande Chemie.  PNAS, GUT, J Hepatol and Nature Comms. She regularly serves as a reviewer for international and national grant awards and for international journals and she is serving as an associate editor Frontiers in Nutrition and Editorial Board of Liver Research.

She is actively involved in biochemistry undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research, and delivers a range of lectures in advanced metabolism at all BSc levels and to accredited professional degrees including Pharmacy, Dentistry and previously to Medical and medicine and health students. She host a series of postgraduate interactive workshops with postgraduate students on strategy (next steps), scientific writing (the blank page) and approaches to award and grant writing.  She was (student) nominated for the Presidents Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Dec 2022) and she was Research Team nominated and awarded an Irish Research Council Ally award for mentorship (Dec 2021).  She is Director of MRes in Biochemistry and Cell Biology from 2021, which, post stakeholder engagement, is now remodeled and recommenced as MRes in Biochemistry and Biosciences, in AY2021.  She is Chair of her School Research committee, Vice Chair of the Research Committee College of SEFS, Vice-Chair of the Irish Mass Spectrometry Society (IMSS) to 2020-2022.  Her full publication list is available at: http://orcid.org/0000-0003-4771-3123 and at https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&user=6KpVtU0AAAAJ




Research Interests

My research focuses on elucidating the genetic and biochemical basis of host-microbe interactions, their regulation and outcomes.

RESEARCH GROUP OVERVIEW: The Gut and its microbiota ( in health and disease) is shaped by diet, environment and gut microbial changes as well as by host genetics.  The influence of these combined factors contributes to processes including gut development and homeostasis, immune function and local and systemic signalling in defining health outcomes.

My group dissects how these different and combined factors can impact health, disease and longevity. The group has focused on microbial host-metabolite and dietary modification that impact the host  (including drug uptake, adiposity, circadian rhythm, immune functions) with a particular emphasis on signalling processes to identity key areas for therapeutic approaches.  We apply targeted and untargeted metabolomic approaches, animal models, cell systems and bacterial molecular and cellular biology to address our questions.

We investigate and pursue:
  • Mechanistic understanding of food enrichment for specific classes of microbes and their fitness to function
  • Understanding of the alternative lifestyles of microbes in the gut, what makes a commensal become a pathobiont?
  • How microbial metabolism of diet and host produced factors reprogramme cell and metabolic processes
  • The interactions between food-microbes and their hosts towards disease and in maintaining health
  • Simply defining health, in the context of microbial functions and modification of metabolites to influence cell signalling processes
  • Drugs and bugs - re-potentiating mechanisms

I teach within the areas of my research interests: Human,  Cellular and Bacteria Metabolism. Signalling. Food-Microbe-Host interactions. Metabolites. Molecular biology and biochemistry of Metabolism.  Translational Health and Genetics.  Genetics and Gene regulation - human and microbial.

My formal teaching is aligned to different formats: Formal lectures; small group learning (tutorials/workshops/practicals); On line CANVAS recordings and supports (student centered learning tools and assessments (ebooks), simulated practicals (Labster); flipped classrooms; smaller group discussions or breakout rooms.

From 2015 –22, 25 students (3-4 /year) engaged for independent laboratory-based research projects (40 contact hours/ student)
  • MH4010: (20 Credits)Translational Medicine: Core module for MHBSc 4 engaged for independent laboratory-based research projects (60 contact hours/ student) Commenced AY21-22: 1 student

  • Director of MRes in Biochemistry and Biosciences (formerly MRes in Biochemistry and Cell Biology)  Reinvigorated the programme, post stakeholder survey and consultation,  to include flexibility. Impact: Highest number of recruits to the programme from 2022-2023
  • PG6004: (5 Credits) Scientific Research Planning and Proposals to MRes and PhD students; 5 x 3hr(s) Interactive and assignment based Workshops (15 contact hours). (Module Coordinator) AY21+   1 case study with guest speaker /week for 1 hour.


Research led teaching:
My group consists normally of 11 (9 core) scientists at different stages of development:
Nominated (by team members ) and awarded for Irish Research Council Ally award for mentorship
  • Current strategic, oversight and direction as main supervisor to 2 PhD students (Killian & Quilter), 1 MRes student (Butler).  Funding in place and recruiting 1 post doctoral researcher, 2 PhD students (SFI funding) and 1x2 year MSc student (Industry) incoming April 2023 (see funding stream).
  • Supporting and co-directing (as co-supervisor) 3 PhD students (40-33%) (Zhang, Saiz, Cronin).
  • Directing, shaping and influencing the science and careers of 2 Post doctoral scientists, both mentored and currently supported by independent funding (Hayoun, Ryan)
  • Directing and influencing the work and career of 1 Research Assistant (Kabir)

Other:
Responsible for initiating the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology Summer Bursary scheme 2017-2019, now passed on to our School Teaching, Learning & Curriculum Committee.

IMPACT: More than 25 students have benefited from training, networking and opportunity in a professional research environment.  Many have now progressed to higher degrees (MSc, PhD) within or outside of UCC

In School roles to influence UG and PG teaching:
  • Chair of the Research Committee, delivering and advocating SEFS and UCC strategic policies and oversight to our School; encouraging awareness and interaction among our and the broader research community; supporting awareness of funding opportunities through newsletters;  bringing together excellent science and scientists  through strategic planning, oversight (with colleagues) of our School seminar series. During this time, funding, publications, EU applications, postgraduate student numbers have increased significantly.
  • Support and input to shape policy and strategy as a member of Graduate Studies Committee
  • Strategised and developed EDI policy as a member & Working Group Leader of Athena Swan (SAT) Bronze award application 2019- Oct 2021; Produced 3x School Induction Handbooks (Staff, Postdoctoral, Student) to ease and inform entry to our School system, culture and policies.

College Level roles to influence UG & PG Teaching:
  • Member of College Council; Input to strategy at College level
