Biography:

Dean Venables obtained his BSc and MSc degrees from Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa. He then went on to complete his doctorate at Yale University in 2001 under Prof. Charles Schmuttenmaer.  His PhD research investigated the properties of liquid mixtures using the then novel technique of ultrafast terehertz spectroscopy to probe the rotational and librational band of water and other polar solvents. This experimental work was complemented with computational studies using molecular dynamics simultations to probe the structure and dynamics of the liquid mixtures at a molecular level. Following his doctorate, he returned to South Africa where he worked at the National Metrology Laboratory developing near-infrared frequency standards using external cavity diode lasers. He then completed a postdoctorate in sensitive atmospheric absorption measurements with Dr Andy Ruth in the Department of Physics, UCC.  In 2005, he was appointed a college lecturer in the Department of Chemistry where he continues to carry out research in atmospheric chemistry.
