Biography

Dr Stuart Collins received his BSc. Degree in Chemistry, U.C.C. in 1998 and then did his PhD. in Organic Chemistry at U.C.C. under the supervision of Prof. Anita Maguire entitled "alpha-Diazosulfoxides-Synthesis and Transformations to alpha-Oxo Sulfines." He decided to follow an academic career path and worked on two Postdoctoral Research projects, the first on development of novel methodology for the synthesis of phosphononucleosides as antiviral agents (University College Cork and Tanaud Inc. Ireland) and the second on the asymmetric synthesis of unnatural amino acids (University College Cork and the Conway Institute University College Dublin). He has has been a lecturer in Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry here in UCC since 2004 and is currently the Director of the Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds (CPC) Degree programme. He is a member of the Analytical and Biological Chemistry Research Facility (ABCRF) and the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC), an SFI funded collaboration involving academia and industry. Dr. Collins has had 10 PhD students and 1 MSc Research student graduated, currently employed in the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland (4 in GSK, 2 in BMS, 1 in Merck, 1 in Eli Lilly) and 2 doing international postdocs. He currently has 5 PhD students in his research group. There have been 6 Enterprise Partnership IRCSET/IRC PhD students in his research group (sponsored by GSK and Merck), 5 independent IRCSET/IRC sponsored PhD students, 2 SFI (SSPC) funded students and 1 DAFF (FIRM) funded student, with total grant income for the period 2008-2018 €1.42M.  ‍

Research Interests

My research is focused mainly in the area of natural product synthesis and organic synthetic methodology with a particular emphasis on continuous processing and flow chemistry. The synthesis of small organic molecules that show biological activity against specific targets such as cancer, leukaemia, HIV etc. is a key overall theme of the group. Currently in my group I have 5 PhD students. There have been 6 Enterprise Partnership IRC PhD students in my research group (sponsored by GSK and Merck), 5 independent IRC sponsored PhD students, 2 SFI (SSPC) funded students and 1 DAFF (FIRM) funded student. Over the past 5 years I have also supervised 20 Final Year Projects (17 Chemistry/CPC and 3 Pharmacy) and 3 UREKA SFI students and 4 Visiting Masters students from Poitiers University and Clermont-Ferrand, France. All of my students and visiting students are doing research in the area of natural product synthesis with a view to synthesizing potential drug molecules for cancer, HIV and leukemia therapy; or organic synthetic methodology. The active research projects in my group at the moment are: 1. The synthesis and reactivity of 2-thio-3-chloroacrylamides (beta-chloroacrylamides).2. New insights into the synthesis of novel alpha-diazocarbonyl compounds and applications to the synthesis of beta-lactone natural products.3. Studies towards the synthesis of lanostane-type natural products. 4. Synthesis and reactivity of novel alpha-diazosulfoxides: Formation of alpha-oxo sulfines as reactive intermediates.5. Synthesis of neolamellarin analogues as antitumor agents 6. Synthesis of glycoalkaloid natural products isolated from potato peel7. Synthesis of furanolipids as possible antitumor agents

Outreach Activities

	Description
	29th June 2011, Analytical and Biological Chemical Research Facility, University College Cork- Overall Coordinator of this International Conference with speakers from Oxford, Bristol and Belfast.
	International Year of Chemistry 2011 National Committee (2010-2011) – invited UCC delegate on this committee which was run principally by the Institute of Chemistry Ireland and PharmaChem Ireland- involved in the organisation, planning and running of national events throughout the IYOC 2011. In 2012 involved with a Young Scientist project on sunscreens with students from Colaiste Colm, Ballincollig.
	8-10th May 2000, 11-13th June 2008 and 22nd-24th June 2016, UCC. Part of the organizing committee for this annual symposium which is rotated around the different universities in Ireland every 8-9 years and is an event where PhD and MSc students present their work through talks or posters over a 3 day event.
	Chemistry and CPC Promotion- Coordinator (Oct 2010 and April 2011) of this very important outreach and promotion event, with responsibility for the preparation and running of the Chemistry and CPC stands, brochure production and distribution and talking to potential students and their parents in the promotion of Chemistry, SEFS and UCC in general. Also gave presentation on CPC degree programme (Oct 2017).
	August 2011-August 2016, Chemistry Department, University College Cork – Overall Coordinator of this annual symposium for the past 6 years where the Chemistry Department PhD and MSc students in 2nd and 3rd present their research and undergo assessment.

	SFI/ABCRF UREKA SITE Site coordinator and member of the organizing committee for the UCC UPCRO (Undergraduate PharmaChemical Research Opportunities) site in 2007, 2008 and 2009 – this SFI funded initiative allowed the ABCRF to host a research site for undergraduate students both national and international for 10 weeks of the summer.
