Biography

Gavin Russell is a lecturer in the School of  Computer Science and Information Technology at University College, Cork, Ireland since 1997. 

He is the director of the BA in Digital Humanities and Information Technology in the School of Computer Science and Information Technology.

He is also the coordinator of Computer Science within the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Science.

He is a founding member of both the MAVRIC and IDEAS research groups.

His main research interests include: HCI, VR, AR, XR, Web Based Learning, Interactive Multimedia. Network Security and Secure Payment Systems.

He received an M.Sc. in Multimedia Technology in 2000. Before joining the university, he consulted in the web publishing, electronic commerce and internet services sectors.

He is also a member University College Cork's Academic Council since being first elected in 2012.

Research Interests

I am a founding member of the MAVRIC (Mixed Augmented Virtual Reality and Immersive Computing) Research lab. MAVRIC is an interdisciplinary research lab addressing various aspects of immersive multimodal systems. The lab is interdisciplinary, working across a number of disciplines, and has a strong emphasis on industry collaboration.

Founding member of the IDEAS Research Group in UCC. This group's work covers the areas of Interaction-Design, E-learning and Speech.

Founding member of the Informing Science Institute which publishes an academically peer refereed journal in the areas of information systems, library science and education science.
