Biography
Nic Wilson is a senior research fellow at Insight, Cork. From 2009-2013 he was a Science Foundation Ireland Principal Investigator on a project on reasoning with preferences in multi-variate problems. He studied Mathematics at Oxford University, and was awarded his PhD in 1992 at Oxford Brookes University, in the area of Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Queen Mary College, London, and a senior research fellow at Keele University, UK and Oxford Brookes University. Dr. Wilson joined 4C in October 2003. He has had more than 20 years experience of researching in Artificial Intelligence, with particular expertise in Reasoning with Preferences and Uncertainty, including applications to recommender systems, telecommunications personalisation and intelligent building operation. He is on the editorial board of Artificial Intelligence Journal, and has served on the programme committees and senior PCs of many AI and uncertainty conferences and workshops, such as AAAI, ECAI, IJCAI, UAI, SUM and ISIPTA.
Research Interests
My work is concerned with computational theories of reasoning for decision support. I focus especially on theories that enable reasoning with user preferences, and reasoning with uncertain information. Although much of my work has been algorithmic and on the foundations of these topics, I am also very much interested in applications and have worked, in particular, on topics in telecoms personalisation, in intelligent building control, and in recommender systems.
One major theme of my work in recent years has been reasoning with partially ordered preferences. Preferences can be partially ordered in many kinds of situations, for instance, when there is uncertainty about the user preferences, or when decisions are being evaluated on more than one criterion, or when there is more than one party involved in the decision making. I have worked on soft constraints based on partially ordered preferences, and compact comparative preference languages generalising the CP-nets language, looking at foundations and algorithmic issues. Another theme has been graphical models for reasoning with preferences and/or uncertainty.
