Research Interests

Quantum Control via Shortcuts to Adiabaticity

The preparation and control of quantum states with internal and external degrees of freedom quickly, accurately and robustly is of the utmost importance for future quantum technologies. So far, the most robust state preparation and manipulation techniques were provided by adiabatic processes and this is the reason why they were ubiquitous in cold atom physics, nuclear magnetic resonance, optics and many other fields. However in many cases such processes take too long and become impractical since their slowness makes them extremely sensitive to decoherence and noise. So experimentalists basically had to choose between slowness and robustness.

The demand of new methods for a fast and also robust manipulation of quantum states has recently led to the new research field of “Shortcuts to Adiabaticity”. This field started with the paper [Chen2010a]. The goal of “shortcuts to adiabaticity” is to construct new protocols for a fast manipulation of quantum states by speeding-up adiabatic processes. These new protocols are fast and also ultra-stable concerning perturbations. Moreover, it is important to note that the resulting protocols are analytically given and not achieved by numerical optimization. The field of shortcuts has grown significantly. “Shortcuts to Adiabaticity” have mainly been developed for atom optical systems, for example shortcuts to the adiabatic expansion of atomic clouds [Chen2010a] or Bose-Einstein condensates [Muga2009], shortcuts to adiabatic population inversion in atoms [Chen2010b, Ibanez2012, Ruschhaupt2012] or atomic mixtures [Choi2011], optical lattices [Yuce2012] and trapped ions [Lau2012]. The group of G. Labeyrie [Schaff2010] has recently experimentally implemented the shortcut to adiabatic expansion of an atomic cloud and the group of O. Morsch and E. Arimondo in Pisa [Bason2011] has experimentally implemented a shortcut to adiabatic population inversion in atoms. A current review about “Shortcuts to Adiabaticity” is [Torrontegui2013].

The research group of A. Ruschhaupt is working in developing and optimizing new "Shortcuts to Adiabaticity" especially in quantum optical systems.
