Research Interests

• Siblings of Adults with Intellectual Disabilities • Sexuality and social policy • Politics of Maternity Services Provision • Victim Experiences of Criminal Justice System • Inclusive Education for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities • Feminist Oral History I am currently Co Principal Investigator on a project entitled 'Building Capacity among Adult Siblings of People with Intellectual Disabilities /Autism' which is funded by the National Disability Authority Research Promotion Scheme. This research seeks to identify the challenges and opportunities associated with being the sibling of an adult with intellectual disability/autism and the supports, which siblings might require in this regard. Recently (2013-2015) I was a member of a research team (Elizabeth Kiely (PI) Karl Kitching & Deborah Ging) who carried out an Irish Research Council funded project which looked at the Commercialisation and Sexualisation of Children in Ireland. Between 2009 and 2012 I worked on a FP7 Science in Society project entitled European Patients' Organisations in Knowledge Society (EPOKS) with my colleagues Orla O'Donovan & Claire Edwards, School of Applied Social Studies, UCC. In conjunction with French, Portuguese and British research partners, we explored the knowledge related activities of patient organisations in four condition areas namely, Alzheimer disease, maternity services, ADHD and orphan diseases. As part of this initiative I conducted research on the knowledge related activities of the Irish Association for the Improvement of Maternity Services (AIMS). See Akrich, M; Leane, M; Roberts, C; and Arriscado Nunesd, J. 'Practising childbirth activism: A politics of evidence' (2014), BioSocieties, 9: 129-152. In 2001 and again in 2010 I was Co-Principal Investigator on two research projects with colleagues from the School of Law in UCC, which looked at victim experiences. The 2001 report commissioned by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform looked at the experiences of victims of rape and sexual assault (Leane, M.; Ryan, S.; Fennell, C. & Egan, E. Attrition in Sexual Assault Offence Cases in Ireland: A Qualitative Analysis, (2001) Government Publications, Dublin, (0-7076-9233-4). The 2010 research analysed the needs and concerns of victims of crime in their engagement with the criminal justice system (see Kilcommins, S, Leane, M. et al. (2010) The Needs and Concerns of Victims of Crime in Ireland, Dublin: Commission for the Support of Victims of Crime, Department of Justice Equality and Law Reform, pp. 215. See www.csvc.ie). Between 1999 and 2001 I was Co-Principal investigator with Dr. Elizabeth Kiely on a Higher Education Authority PRTLI funded Women and Work Oral History Project 1930-1960, which involved the collection of 42 life story interviews with women born in Ireland between 1912 and 1942 and the publication of book on the subject - Kiely, E. & Leane, M. (2012) Irish Women’s Working Lives, 1930-1960: An Oral History Study, Irish Academic Press, Dublin & Oregon, (978-0-7165- 3390-0), pp. 220.

Outreach Activities

 Description

In 2009 I developed and piloted a programme for adults with intellectual disability called the Certificate in Contemporary Living Programme.

The Certificate in Contemporary Living (CCL), is a flagship programme which has seen University College Cork open its doors for the first time to students with intellectual disabilities.

The CCL programme initially began  as a pilot initiative with three service providers in the Cork area, namely Enable Ireland, Brothers of Charity and Cope Foundation has now developed into a two year part-time NUI Special Purpose Ccertificate programme.  To date the programme has over 40 graduates and another cohort of 23 students enrolled in September 2014.

The CCL exemplifies a creative, mutually enriching synergy between the university and the local civic society.  The CCL course provides structured opportunities for interaction and shared learning between students with intellectual disabilities and non-disabled students pursuing sports studies, social work, occupational therapy and speech and language programmes.

Teaching Activities

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests are in the spheres of sexuality and society, feminist social policy, childbirth politics, women's studies, oral history, women and work, research methodology and research skills.  There is a strong correlation between my teaching and my research, which continuously informs my work in the classroom and ensures that my pedagogy is systematically enriched and enlivened.  My postgraduate research supervision also provides an ongoing source of stimulating ideas and questions which also enhance my teaching practice.
