Maria J Sousa Gallagher

Biography

 Dr. Sousa-Gallagher is Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator in Process & Chemical Engineering, School of Engineering, SEFS at University College Cork (UCC).
 She has a BEng degree in Food/ Chemical Engineering (1990) and a PhD in Biotechnology/Food Processing Engineering (1998) from College of Biotechnology, Catholic University of Portugal, MSc in Food Science & Technology (1993) and Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (2008) from University College Cork (UCC), Ireland. She was a postdoctoral researcher at Food Science, Technology and Nutrition, UCC (1998-2001), with concurrent international and national projects in the area of biochemistry of dairy products and published extensively in these fields.
 Currently her research interests encompass 3 major strategic areas:
 Manufacturing Competitiveness: i) Quality by Design for pharmaceutical/biopharmaceutical, food/biochemical systems, ii) Risktools and engineering aspects in food distribution, iii) Integrative mathematical modelling of processing systems;
 Processing Technologies & Novel Materials: i) Engineering packaging design & optimisation, i.e., packaging properties needs for respiring and non-respiring products, packaging design and validation, ii)       Quality and shelf-life estimation;
 Sustainable Energy and Environmental Technologies: i) Novel and efficient recycling process for composite material (tyre,  printed circuit board, plastics, etc) combining pyrolysis with sink-float separation, ii)           Sustainable biobased film packaging development from food waste resources.
 She has been involved in national (FIRM, EI, PC, C+) and European programmes (FP7, CRAFT, INCO, ALFA, FAIR, AAIR) at a fundamental and applied level. Her work involved collaborative innovative projects with several International companies and Irish industry, and development of web based software Pack-in-MAP® (www.pack-in-MAP.com).
 She currently teaches six undergraduate modules of the BE Process & Chemical Engineering, and two with direct supervisory involvement (Work Placement & Research Project). Director of Masters and PG Diploma in Pharmaceutical & Biopharmaceutical Engineering, leading Part 2 (Minor Research Thesis), module coordinator/Lecturer. She lectures also on the MSc Biotechnology.
 She has a very strong scientific publication record with high impact factor (ISI, 2747 citations, h-factor 23, in food science/ technology/ engineering), comprising >200 publications, i.e., 82 peer-reviewed papers, 14 book chapters, >130 presentations, 6 plenary and several invited presentations. - Engaged with the Irish Fruits and Vegetable industry sector (i.e., Keelings, Nature’s Best and Monahan Mushorooms) and multinationals packaging manufactures (Innovia, UK; NNZ, Holland) and multinational packaging service providers (Rofin, Gernany/UK, Sagueny, Egypt) in the area of  “Engineering packaging design and shelf-life estimation of perishable food products”.

- Director Masters and PG Diploma in Pharmaceutical & Biopharmaceutical Engineering. Leading, coordinating and supervising Part 2 (Minor Research Thesis) of this Masters. Supervised 45 MEngSc with industry between 2010-2018, and currently is supervising 15 dissertations.
- Leading, coordinating and supervising Final Year Research project in Process & Chemical Engineering (PCE) . Supervised more than 60 Final Year Research Projects (2007-2018). Currently Co-Supervises 10 Final Year Research projects in PCE.
- Coordinator and Academic Mentor of Process & Chemical Engineering Industry Work Placement  Programme, since 2002. Responsible for selecting and mentoring the best Process & Chemical Engineering student for the Joe Gantly Prize in Engineering.  The Joe Gantly award recognises the contribution to Cork’s business community, and is awarded by Cork Chamber of Commerce to the best overall engineering student on work placement.
