Research Profile

Yvonne O'Connor

Biography

Dr O' Connor is a Lecturer within Business Information System and is a Senior Researcher within the Health Information Systems Research Centre (HISRC), Business Information Systems, Cork University Business School at University College Cork. As a committed researcher and lecturer with many years’ experience at a leading academic institution in Ireland, Yvonne initially set about this task by being awarded a PhD in Business Information Systems. This was achieved through hard work, dedication and the development of excellent communication and problem solving skills.  The success of this work to date is reflected in the completion of a number of presentations at international conferences and recording a number of publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals in the Health Informatics and Information Systems domains.  She currently serves on the Editorial Board of two journals (Health Policy & Technology and the International Journal of Reliable and Quality E-Healthcare), a further reflection of her success to date in academia.  Her teaching style has also progressed in successfully delivering a range of core Information Systems subjects to various class sizes, ranging from 8 to 180 student participants. She currently co-directs the MSc Management Information and Managerial Accounting Systems (MSc MIMAS) and MSc Digital Health programmes in UCC

Research Interests

Yvonne's primary area of research focuses on the introduction, sustained use and ethical implications of digital technology in healthcare (in both a developed and developing world context). This involves considering how health care is delivered and how it might be improved by introducing IS; identifying barriers and facilitators to mHealth pre- and post-implementation; investigating the decision making process of both direct and indirect users of digital health; exploring health-related outcomes associated with clinical decision support systems, examining digital health from a developed and developing world context and investigating the electronic consent (eConsent) process of online fora. Yvonne has also been lead UI/UX analyst for a number of mobile health projects. This work involves prototyping and designing graphic user interfaces (GUIs). Her PhD was in the area of mobile technology post-adoptive use in a healthcare domain. More specifically, her research examined an under-investigated area of extant literature pertaining to mobile technology infusion by healthcare practitioners. A model of mHealth infusion was derived which identified (a) prerequisite conditions of individual post-adoptive use of mobile technological tools by healthcare practitioners and (b) the perceived benefits in terms of individual performance from infusing mobile health technologies at the patient's point-of-care. She has experience working on a range of large, national and international funded projects. She was a co-applicant on a successful Irish Research Council (IRC) application and is currently a collaborator on a Wellcome Trust funded project. Yvonne's passion for research is reflected in her involvement with a number of interdisciplinary research projects within the Health Information Systems Research Centre (HISRC), UCC.
Yvonne is also an Editorial Board Member for Health Policy and Technology journal and the International Journal of Reliable and Quality E-Healthcare. She is a reviewer for top journals and conferences; namely, Journal of Medical Internet Research, European Conference of Information Systems, International Conference of Information Systems, European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation and International Conference on Mobile Business. She has published in a number of national and internal journal and conferences. Yvonne's research strategy is driven by my desire to become an independent researcher in the academic domain. She continuously builds on her existing research skills and continues to publish in international journals and conferences. As a result, she reviews recently published material in the digital health domain, seeking new academic and practitioner problems to research. To date, Yvonne has published a number of papers in both the IS and health informatics fields with the expectation of publishing more research in international peer-reviewed journals. With all this experience, Yvonne incorporates her research into the delivery of lectures, across a range of disciplines at both under- and post-graduate levels to provide students with real-world, practical examples.
