Anne-Marie Martin
Research Profile
Biography
Dr Anne-Marie Martin is a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at University College Cork. She teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programme as well as doctoral supervision and examination. Her teaching adopts an inclusive, research-informed approach, with an emphasis on student engagement, accessible assessment design, and support for diverse learners. Further, Anne-Marie is a Senior Teaching Fellow with the id+ project, supporting colleagues across the university to develop inclusive teaching practices for students with intellectual disabilities.
Her research focuses on inclusive education, intellectual disability, healthcare access, and participatory research. She has a particular interest in supporting people with profound intellectual disabilities, with an emphasis on developing meaningful approaches to communication and interaction. Her work explores how individuals who use alternative methods to communicate can be included in research and education, and how their experiences can inform more responsive and equitable health and social care practices.
Anne-Marie is involved in national and international research collaborations and has led and contributed to several interdisciplinary projects. She continues to support student research, curriculum development, and practice development, with a strong commitment to inclusive and person-centred approaches in both teaching and research.

Research Interests
Dr Martin's research focuses on inclusive education, health equity, and improving access to healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities, with a specific interest in communication and interaction for individuals with profound intellectual disability. Her work emphasises participatory and inclusive research methods, with expertise in co-design, PPI, and accessible dissemination. Anne-Marie's research is interdisciplinary, bridging Nursing, Education, Psychology, and Health Communication. She collaborates nationally and internationally, leading and contributing to multi-partner projects. Her programme of research is values-driven and equity-focused, aiming to inform evidence based practice, inclusive practice, and education across health and social care settings.
