Research Profile

Janas Harrington

Biography

I am a Senior Lecturer and Director for the Bsc Public Health Sciences, School of Public Health UCC. I graduated with a BSc (Nutritional Science) in 1996, an MA (Health Promotion) in 1997 a PhD (Nutrition Epidemiology) in 2012 and a PG Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in 2013.  Between 2012 and 2015 I held the post of Health Promotion Pathway Co-ordinator on the Master of Public Health, UCC. Between 2015-2016 I was the Director of the online Master of Public Health, UCC.    I am a research-active public health nutritionist with expertise in dietary pattern analysis. My specific area of interest is in studying the determinants of healthy dietary patterns and the association between diet patterns and chronic disease, including cardiovascular risk and obesity.  I have been involved in some of the largest epidemiological studies in Ireland including the 1st National Health and Lifestyle Study (SLAN 1998) and the General Healthcare Study of the Prisoner Population of Ireland (2000), National Health and Lifestyle Survey (SLÁN 2007), Cork and Kerry Diabetes and Heart Disease Study Re-Screen (2008) and the Mitchelstown Cohort Study (2010). I am the lead investigator in the Mitchelstown Cohort Study Re-Screen (2015), with responsibility for designing the dietary intake assessment for the study and coordinating the study fieldwork.    I have led successful grant applications as a PI and been a co-applicant and collaborator on grants worth a total of approx. €2 million including PI of one of the Irish consortia contributing to the EU JPI DEDIPAC Knowledge Hub (partner #214). I am currently a work package leader for an EU-funded Policy Evaluation Network evaluating the effectiveness of existing policies for lifestyle interventions (partner #008).  The work will produce for the first time an Irish Food Environment Policy Index benchmarking the Irish food environments against international best practice.  Ongoing work includes leading the evaluation of the implementation of the Irish obesity policy and action plan.    I am a member of the Healthy Eating Sub-group and the Food Re-formulation subgroup of the Obesity Policy Implementation Oversight Group, convened by the Department of Health. I am a committee member of the GAA National Health and Wellbeing Committee and I was recently appointed Chair of the Cork Food Policy Council.   I have 55 peer review publications with an h-index of 25 and an i10-index of 42.

Research Interests

My research is anchored in the Health Research Board, Centre for Diet and Health Research, UCC (http://www.ucc.ie/en/hrbc/). My research interests are nutritional epidemiology and public health nutrition. More specifically, the nutritional and environmental determinants of obesity and physical inactivity as risk factors for CVD.  I have been involved in some of the largest epidemiological studies in Ireland. I was the UCC project researcher on the National Health and Lifestyle Survey (SLÁN 2007), the 3rd of the Irish National Health and Lifestyle Surveys and the largest conducted to date. I coordinated the nutritional component of SLÁN 2007 and jointly co-ordinated the physical examination. I was lead author on the SLÁN nutrition report and co-author of the main survey report. Prior to my lectureship appointment I was a senior researcher on the 10 year follow-up of the Cork and Kerry Diabetes and Heart Disease Study and the Mitchelstown Cohort Study.  The over-arching focus of my research to date is exploration of lifestyle patterns with a specific focus on dietary patterns, for determining low-risk CVD status.  I have published on the determinants of healthy diet and the impact of protective lifestyle behaviours on physical and mental health. My PhD thesis (conferred October 2012) was titled "Diet, lifestyle and modifiable environmental risk factors for cardiovascular disease: patterns and clusters in cross sectional analysis".   The over-arching focus of my PhD was to investigate the association between dietary patterns and clustering of dietary patterns with other lifestyle behaviours and major health outcomes.    I am the PI and the UCC lead investigator for the EU Joint Programme Initiative-Determinants of Diet and Physical Activity (DEDIPAC) Knowledge Hub (€316,000 awarded by HRB). Another project of which I am a PI is the Cork Children’s Lifestyle Study (CCLaS), which has estimated the current prevalence of childhood obesity in Ireland and will identify the energy gap by using dietary intakes of the children and objectively measured physical activity data. It is the first study of its kind in Ireland to estimate dietary salt intake and measure blood pressure in 9-yr old Irish children.
